The House approved a measure to lower the voting age to 18 in all elections starting next January, sending the bill to the White House by a 272 to 132 vote. The package also would extend the 1965 Voting Rights Act for five years, maintaining registration for about one million Negroes in seven Southern states.
Twelve candidates including Walter Cash and Wesley Waldbillig file for Missoula mayoral race to replace Richard Shoup who resigned after winning a GOP bid for the Western Montana seat. Other contenders include Alice Campbell J J Howe Jay Kurtz Deane Jones J G Lamoreaux Jack Haines Tom Mongar Loren Nedley and S John Schile.
President Nixon urged business and labor to curb price and wage boosts in a national broadcast. He announced two commissions and an inflation alert system to spotlight excessive increases, saying the fight against inflation is everyone’s business.
A Bozeman trial heard a man who says he was a friend of Archie Warwick testify that Warwick admitted involvement in a 1964 murder. The witness described alleged statements and details he heard from Warwick, presenting a possible link to the crime.
Shirley Bellrichard, 25, widow of Medal of Honor recipient Pfc. Leslie Bellrichard killed in Vietnam, joins the Army to see what he saw. She received the Medal from President Nixon at the White House last July. The recruit forfeits $350 to $400 monthly survivor benefits, earning $124.60 as a new recruit.
Mrs Veltkamp testified that Miss Clark was found drugged or dragged behind a car on a quiet Bozeman area road. Archie related the discovery and identified the girl as Bobbi Clark. Warwick appeared nervous while answering questions about the body.
Butte’s Catholic community will lose Sacred Heart Church on July 1 after 57 years. Only the church and rectory remain active as the old grade school and sisters’ convent have closed. A final Sunday Mass was expected June 28 with possible additional services before closing.
The Sacred Heart parish, led by Rev. Edmond Taylor since 1946, will be absorbed by adjacent parishes to cut costs and consolidate. Boundaries assign north Broadway to St Mary, south Broadway west of Wyoming and north of Platinum and Curtis north side to St Patrick, and south Curtis east of Wyoming to St Joseph.
The Butte City Council heard a report from City Building Inspector Frank Harkness on major deterioration in City Hall dating to 1890. He said the third floor has a false ceiling causing walls to spread and that repairs would be prohibitive. He warned the building could cave in on a clear day or during heavy snowfall. The council delayed action until Friday to review insurance bids from Glacier General and Farmers groups.
Fair to partly cloudy skies with rising temperatures. today’s high around 72 and low near 42. The forecast calls for milder days ahead as temperatures trend upward through the week.
Montana Power Co. held its annual meeting in Butte with 452 shareholders listening as J E Corette chairman and chief executive outlined a favorable five month performance and optimistic outlook for 1970 with expected rises in revenues net income and earnings per share. George W O Connor president spoke on business and policy.
More than half the primary campaign money for Montana State Supreme Court candidates came from Montana lawyers. Four of six candidates had clubs, totaling 8515 with lawyers contributing 5370. W Gabriel led lawyer donations, while Castles had no club. The ABA ethics canon warns against gifts by lawyers, though campaign contributions are debated.
