Nixon surtax package advances from House committee
The House Ways and Means Committee approved most of President Nixon’s anti inflation tax plan unchanged, extending the 10 percent surtax through December 31 and 5 percent through June 30 1970, with a low income allowance to aid about 13 million people and repeal of the investment credit. The panel also postponed auto and telephone excise tax cuts by a year and allowed five year depreciation for pollution control equipment with a retroactive cutoff to April 18.

Montana State officials expect action toward reconstructing Montana Street as part of the federal highway system. Helena youths plead guilty to rape attempt
Three Helena area youths pleaded guilty to attempted rape and received two year deferred sentences. Judge Nat Allen ordered 30 days in county jail for the three, ages 17, to reflect on how close they came to prison. Defendants are Timothy Dolan Leo Helfert and Joe Serati.
Nixon plans two Vietnam troop withdrawals this year
Washington sources say the Nixon administration drafted tentative plans for two more Vietnam withdrawals in August and October totaling 45 000 to 75 000 troops. The moves follow the Midway 25 000 withdrawal and depend on Hanoi Saigon reactions and Viet Cong actions.
