British troops patrolled troubled Holy Land areas after a two night wave of terrorism. Six Jews and three British soldiers died as bridges were damaged and Haifa railway workshops suffered extensive fire and explosions. Two saboteurs were killed in Haifa attacks.
An all time top price of 41 cents was paid to Harold Peterson for a baby beef at the 4 H club and Future Farmers show and sale in Dillon. The beef went to Cherrie cafe of Armstead. 36 cents to Darwin Peterson by Green's cafe of Butte. 34 cents to John Hren by Cherrie cafe. 30 cents to G. Clemon by Chequamegon cafe of Butte. Heaviest buyers included Green's cafe with 15 calves and Pipe Organ lodge of Dillon with five. Calves totaled 61, judged by Claude Windecker and F A Ralston. Luther Smith was auctioneer. Both events were in the livestock pavilion at the fairgrounds with buyers from Butte, Anaconda and other cities.
A rock and dirt slide about 12 miles west of Plains 80 miles west of Missoula blocked U S Highway 10 and tied up Northern Pacific rail traffic. The slide about 200 feet long and 10 feet deep should be cleared by Tuesday with two westbound NP passenger trains held at Paradise and an eastbound train expected through early Tuesday. Motorists were advised to detour via Yellowstone Highway No 10 from Missoula to Spokane for two days after a Monday cloudburst.
An undetermined number of German prisoners were injured when the truck transporting them from beet fields struck a highway rail 10 miles east of Miles City on Monday night. Six men were hospitalized. 18 prisoners were aboard at the time of the crash.
Police used clubs and force to disperse a disorderly crowd in Athens on Monday night as a 24 hour general strike called by the Leftist General Confederation of Labor began in protest of government actions against Communist bands in Macedonia.
Saburo Kurusu, the Japanese peace envoy from Pearl Harbor days, said in Washington that Tokyo sought three concessions from the United States to avert war. Keenan quoted Kurusu as saying Tojo instructed the deal: unfreeze assets, provide gasoline shipments, and embargo gasoline to China. In exchange Japan would withdraw troops from Indo China.
Washington reports conferees from both chambers offered drafts on selective service. The House would exempt 18 year olds while drafting 19 year olds. the Senate would delay 18s until 19s are taken. Both sides rejected each other’s plans 4 to 3, risking expiration of the draft act. Chairman Albert Thomas said a single legislator could tilt the talks and another meeting is set for Thursday.
Seven large oil paintings by the late Charles M. Russell, famed western artist, were sold in Great Falls to the Newhouse Galleries of New York City. The sale was announced by Mrs. H. M. Sprague, whose father, Robert Vaughn, a close friend of Russell, collected the works.
The New York State Court of Claims on Monday granted Bertram M. Campbell of Floral Park $115,000 for humiliation and loss of liberty resulting from an unjust forgery conviction and prison sentence.
President Truman pressed congressional leaders on handling the OPA with Senator Barkley promising to push for the best bill possible. Speaker Rayburn warned of possible veto and the chance Congress may temporarily extend current OPA powers. Conferees will start work late, leaving little time before OPA expiration on June 30 amid broad calls for stricter controls.
Hollywood legal action centers on whether Mexican, Nevada and other divorces obtained without bona fide residence are legal as Irene Manning fights an annulment suit. Her attorney said a ruling on legality will be requested during the trial, set for next Friday.
Attorney General Tom Clark approved the $47.5 million sale of the U S government steel plant at Geneva Utah to United States Steel Corp. The decision notes no anti trust violation but keeps jurisdictional reviews open and subject to future court or agency actions on pricing policies.
Republican Horace A. Hildreth is renominated in Maine after 431 of 619 precincts, with 31,545 votes to Roy L. Fernald’s 8,064 for a veteran bonus. In the Democratic race, F. Davis Clark leads Le land B. Currier for the governorship. Massachusetts Michigan primaries follow.
A severe tornado left at least 20 people dead across Michigan and neighboring Canada. Reports indicate extensive damage to towns and infrastructure as emergency crews survey affected districts and aid efforts scale up.
Hardin on Monday saw the shooting death of Anna Mae Rupe 22 and the suicide of her father in law H W Rupe after an argument on the ranch porch. County Attorney Burt W Kronmiller said the sole eye witness was Anna Mae’s sister in law. Police tracked Rupe’s body by plane to a creek area near the ranch with searchers guiding officers to the scene. Anna Mae Rupe leaves a husband Charles and a two year old daughter. No inquest is planned.
Tehran reports Prince Mozaffar Firouz named Dr Salamollan Javid as the new governor general of Azerbaijan Province and said a national election decree is ready. Javid is described as a Communist active in the 1919-20 push to unite Azerbaijan with Russia. Firouz also says Jafar Pishevari is retiring from public life, with a chance he may seek a parliamentary seat.

Australia France and Mexico oppose Britain's bid to send the Spanish case from the United Nations Security Council to the General Assembly without a recommendation for breaking diplomatic ties with Franco Spain. The council adjourned amid debate after two and a half hours.
The House banking committee urged ratification of the 3.75 billion dollar British loan as essential for world peace and prosperity. The panel voted 20 to 5 to send the bill, while a minority within the committee denounced foreign handouts and warned of Anglo American imperialism and future U S commitments.
The weather bureau forecasts a strong cold air mass and sharp cooling in the Midwest. Temperatures could fall from the 90s to the 70s by Tuesday night as a heat wave eases and moves eastward from the Great Lakes region.
Frank Storer a 69 year old lumberman and sawmill operator in western Montana died in a Hamilton hospital from injuries after a fall a few days earlier. A Spanish American War veteran he is survived by a sister Mrs H A Flightner of Darby and two nephews and nieces of Darby and Spokane. Burial will be in Darby on Wednesday afternoon.
U S Senator Burton Wheeler told Great Falls crowds that the nation faces inflation now and a definite deflation later, though timing is uncertain. He urged UN viability and peace through effective United Nations action and spoke at a Lions Club luncheon before traveling toward Westby.
Dave Billington of Livingston was riding his bicycle on a road near Columbus when a deer bounded into his path. They collided and the deer fled uninjured. Billington sought hospital treatment for bruises and cuts.
A severe storm tornadic event caused at least 20 known deaths and over 100 injuries across River Rouge Detroit and Sandwich Windsor. The wind toppled houses and tossed freight cars while waterspouts formed on the Detroit River. Power and communications were disrupted as hospitals faced strain on both sides of the border.
The Butte school board held a special meeting to consider bids for clearing fire debris and site cleanup. Three bids were read with Carlow Carlow and Carlow the lowest at 24 600, others at 39 750 and 85 000, but contract let was withheld until Architect Walter Arnold completes a full fire damage report in 3 weeks to a month. The Emerson school repair bids were also opened with Cahill Mooney at 3 067.
GREAT FALLS June 171. A woman attempted to end her life by leaping from a bridge into the Missouri River but was saved when Clarence Kommers, who had been watching her, grabbed her wrist. Police Officers Charles Herzog and Leonard Jorgensen, driving by in a radio car, assisted in pulling her back onto the bridge.
