The case highlights the reach of federal enforcement against bootlegging and tax offenses, with the suspect facing penalties for illicit gains and lawbreaking behavior tied to the dry era.
A former Butte girl Flor ence Vadnais Kitoff aged 33 will go on trial in Seattle next Monday for the fatal shooting of her brother in law Paul Kitoff. Police say she claimed she aimed at Paul after disputes over her marriage. The case draws attention as defense counsel Henry Levinski from Seattle works with local prosecutors. Capone case and Johnson remarks appear in context but the primary item is the impending murder trial of Mrs. Kitoff.
City officials meet with local bankers to weigh bonding the outstanding warrant debt of about 819000. H T Parson, president of F W Woolworth Co, notes a 2 percent year to date loss through June due to one extra May business day and Decoration Day Saturday sales drop of 1.4 million. June begins with a $397,000 week increase, 7 percent, of which 311,000 comes from older stores. Parson cites improved buying sentiment nationwide and anticipates further gains.
From the State Division of Publicity Montana lists five vegetable and fruit canneries that year packing 491 194 cases of peas beans cherries sauerkraut pumpkin corn and carrots equal to 307 railroad car loads.
Gerald Barteau, 24, Pasadena, disabled by polio, saved 8 year old John Barton Carawan from drowning off Sugar Loaf near Laguna Beach after a 20 person human chain failed. Barteau towed the boy 100 feet to shore and revived him with a respirator after fifteen minutes.
Miss Alice Conway of the national Girl Scouts council arrives in Butte to meet local council leaders and plan program development. She attends a Butte council camp committee meeting and a Camp Castle Rock session with commissioner Mrs. Morgan Wright, then joins social receptions and a leaders’ association meeting.
Belgrade June 16 a prank by an amateur radio operator sparked Balkan wide alarm by claiming King Zog I of Albania had been assassinated. Despite swift denials the false report circulated across European capitals. Zog’s past attacks and hostile factions in Albania fed the rumor’s credibility while he remains under guard after an earlier Vienna assassination attempt.
Anaconda police and sheriff officers disclosed that ten thousand rounds of ammunition, a rifle, and 15 revolvers of various sizes were stolen over the weekend from Muller Hardware, 407 East Park Avenue. Fingerprints were taken and authorities in nearby towns are aiding the search.
The weather bureau forecast thundershowers for parts of the Northwest drought area but none in prospect for Montana, a state hard hit by drought. North and South Dakota Minnesota and Idaho may see rain tonight or tomorrow in some portions.
Montana forecast shows unsettled conditions on Wednesday and Thursday with cooler temperatures in the eastern portion. Stronger activity or showers possible, especially in eastern areas, while western regions may see pockets of clouds and intermittent rain.
Police and fire crews fought a small blaze in an uptown business block last night at Shirley clothing store. Night chief James Larkin spotted smoke from the fourth floor and firefighters quickly removed a burning mattress. Detective Jack Duggan helped extinguish the fire, amid crowding spectators and a momentary traffic standstill. The cause remained undetermined and damage reported as slight.
Maryland Governor Albert Ritchie told the Advertising Federation of America convention that high tariffs hurt export trade and raise prices for farmers. He warned that labor saving devices and factory surpluses push goods outward while the government’s tariff walls curb demand.
Albert B Fall secretary of the interior under Harding consented to army doctors examining him at Fort Bliss Texas to determine if he is physically fit to go to Washington to begin a year in jail for accepting a bribe linked to the oil lease scandal. Government officials had given him an ultimatum to submit or face immediate sentencing.
Ed M. Alto, 26, formerly of 450 East Broadway, is ill in Hamilton with spotted fever per reports from Butte. He had recently purchased a ranch near Florence by Sweeney Creek and traveled to Sweeney Lake near the Idaho line two weeks ago, contracting the fever. He had not been inoculated. his father, a miner, lives at 450 East Broadway and his mother stays with him at the ranch.
A clean up campaign to rid this section of gangsters and crooks is in full sweep with federal and state authorities in two counties and local law enforcement united. The drive follows last week's stay of Earl Seter, former boxer and underworld figure. Harold McGuire, proprietor of a beer joint, is charged with murder and freed on ten thousand dollar bond. Police Chief William J. Quinn vows to close speak easies and minor traffic dens as federal Prohibition Administator W. G. Walker pledges cooperation. A large squad of prohibitionists and police raid venues yesterday and today.
