Anaconda to Add 135 Jobs at Berkeley Pit in 40 Hour Week

The Anaconda Co. will add about 135 jobs at the Berkeley Pit copper mine starting July 1 and revert the workforce to a 40 hour week while the pit operates seven days a week. About 75 new operations workers and 60 maintenance staff will be hired as the site maintains a 46,000 ton daily ore rate, with preference given to laid off Anaconda and Butte workers and others affected by plant closures and divestitures.

Highway toll rises with five more deaths in Montana

Five people died in highway crashes in Montana including three Goltz children in a two car head on collision seven miles west of Chester on U S 2. Helen 29 Curt 6 and Kimberly 5 Goltz of Glasgow died in the crash. Victoria Kienenberger 17 Turner and Floyd Stoddard of Jamestown N D also perished. Clif ford Goltz was in good condition at Chester hospital. Tim Curlee 24 and Judy Ross were occupants of the other car.

Six accused in two Butte crime incidents

Three men face first degree burglary charges after a break in at the East Gate IGA store on Cobban Avenue. Police say about 160 dollars in cigarettes and pens were stolen and a window was smashed during the early Thursday morning arrest. The suspects Daniel Bajovich 18, Dan Murphy 18 and Terry Brown 18 are jailed on 7500 dollar bonds each.

Metcalf Suffered Lung Congestion In Helena Hospital

Sen. Lee Metcalf of Montana, 61, was hospitalized in Helena with congested lung and prior pneumonia. His wife Donna said he appeared in good condition after arriving from Washington, and by evening his color had returned following a bedside visit at St Peters Hospital.

Anaconda man gets 10 year manslaughter term

James Rouse, 29, of Anaconda, was sentenced to 10 years for manslaughter in the Deer Lodge County case over the shooting death of Dell Brown, with five years suspended and credit for time served. The judge urged AA and noted Brown’s widow’s statement attributed to an accidental shooting.
