Soviet SoYuz 9 Sets Longest Spaceflight Record

Soviet news agencies report SoYuz 9 has exceeded Gemini 7’s 13 day 18 hour 35 minute endurance, reaching 14 days with 220 orbits. Tass notes a third orbit correction in the 208th orbit as cosmonauts Nikolayev and Sevastyanov conduct medical and technical experiments in weightlessness.

Fatal One Vehicle Crash Near Duck Creek Wye

Lawrence E Daly 24 of 7 W Woolman died in a single vehicle crash three miles west of the Duck Creek Wye in Gallatin County. Walter Byrd 26 of Butte was injured and released from Bozeman Deaconess Hospital. Daly was driving a 1969 Ford pickup at high speed on wet pavement when he left the curve and was thrown from the vehicle. Daly, born December 16 1945 in Butte and a Central High School graduate, is the third Montana highway fatality noted in the report.

Warwick trial drags on as testimony centers on tire tracks

In Bozeman the first degree murder trial of O Archie Warwick continued into its second week. Prosecution witnesses described tire tracks and physical evidence from the Dec 23 1964 slaying of Kalispell teacher Roberta Bobbi Clark.

The Economic Development Administration approved a 405 306 grant for a 125 acre Butte park. Shay Miller says the Local Development Corp will add 133 491 for development. Land donated by Anaconda Co aided approval. Firms Montana Tech Foundation and Computer Consultants plan facilities and jobs.

Court limits draft exemptions to ethic conscientious objectors

The Supreme Court ruled 5-3 that Monday must exempt individuals who object to war on strong ethical or moral grounds even without religious belief. The decision broadens conscientious objector status to non religious beliefs while upholding a 1967 case of Elliott Welsh II. Chief Justice Burger and Justices Stewart White dissented.

City Council Eyes Motorcycle Helmet Law

The City Council moves to require helmets for riders and passengers with penalties up to 300 dollars and 90 days in jail for noncompliance. Alder man Bert Mehrens adds a rule that arms must be unencumbered and riders must use a firmly attached seat.

Judge studies liquor board defense motions

Helena. The fate of five Liquor Control Board members hinges on motions in a civil removal suit by Attorney General Woodahl. Key issue is whether records of 496 liquor samples complied with 1965 law and whether unsaleable liquor records affect the case.
