The Senate approved three bi partisan amendments to President Truman's labor bill. They require good faith bargaining by unions, protect free speech in labor disputes with limits, and demand annual financial reports from both unions and employers before NLRB filings. A fourth anti-Communist oath proposal was deferred.
Dr. Edward A. Condon a silent witness in the Judith Coplon espionage case faces repeated defense questions about atomic data and equipment as prosecutors block relevance. Miss Coplon 28 a former Justice official is expected to testify Thursday. The judge sustains objections noting the line of inquiry does not concern guilt or innocence.
Two year old Kenneth Glen Landes died after falling from a moving automobile in Victoria British Columbia. He was the son of Mrs. Madeline Landes of Glasgow Montana and was visiting Seattle with his father a Great Northern railway employee.
The atomic energy commission said the Hanford Washington plant will start assembling the explosive core of the advanced design atomic bomb on June 27 on an assembly line basis. Chairman David E Lilienthal disclosed the plan while defending higher facility costs and stressing speed to boost the stockpile.
Eddie Waitkus star first baseman of the Philadelphia Phillies was shot by Ruth Steinhagen, 19, in Chicago. He rallied after surgery to remove the bullet near his heart as doctors reported improving prospects for recovery. Steinhagen confessed she shot him out of infatuation and planned to kill him for excitement, citing a split personality while police investigate.
Hundreds of Butte youngsters will attend the second Children's day at Columbia Gardens on Thursday. More than 1,100 youths joined the opening day, and the event offers free transportation for children under 14 via all bus lines, with transfers at Park and Main to special buses to the park from 9:30 to noon. The Anaconda Copper Mining company sponsors the transport, with return trips starting at 1:30.
Michael D. O Connell Jr a World War II army veteran was elected commander of Silver Bow post No 1 American Legion at a Wednesday night meeting following a committee chairmen parley for the 1949 Montana department convention in the Legion hall on West Broadway. Also elected were Dr Robert E Heckman first vice commander Phil Lyons second vice commander Charles McCoy finance officer the Rev Father Frank L Harrington chaplain William Flatters sergeant at arms Dewey Price historian and Bion Hall William Tucker executive board members A plaque was given to the post in memory of David C Ackerschott a recent death by the bowling team The convention session was attended by Department Adjutant Herb Kibler of Helena. Refreshments followed the meeting.
Butte pair wounded in domestic shooting with opposite accounts. Emma Harju 52 and ex-husband Walfred Suonpera 41 were treated after a bathroom shooting at Harju’s home. Both victims expected to recover. police report conflicting statements as to who fired the shots. A 32 caliber revolver with three shells was found at the scene.
Butte will host the Pacific Northwest conference of Savings and Loan associations next week. About 125 executives from six states will attend the 1949 convention with registration starting Sunday and a luncheon closing Tuesday. Gov. Bonner will welcome delegates Monday. keynote speakers include M. K. M. Murphy and William K. Divers.

The House approved a compromise 302 million dollar yearly military pay bill by voice vote. It okayed raises scaled to ranks, with major generals getting up to 201 dollars monthly, and private pays starting at 75 dollars. The bill preserves family allowances and tightens disability retirement rules. it now moves to the Senate.
Paris reports say after five days of secret talks the Big Four foreign ministers moved toward an Austrian treaty and a modus vivendi to ease Germany tensions. A secret session was canceled though a new meeting was set for June 16 to continue discussions, with Berlin railway strike as a key issue.
The Butte city council backed a Deer Lodge Deer Park site for a state home for the aged with a $995,000 building. They set a special meeting to open bids for a power shovel, approved retirement for Adelbert Rodda, leave for Roy Beadle, awarded a $10,960 asphalt contract to Kiely Construction, and discussed bicycle safety on Butte streets. The Deer Lodge choice was urged by Tim J. Sullivan of the Butte Development association and Louis Belangie of the Plumbers Union.

The Senate banking committee unanimously votes to start a probe into a proposed super broker for coal interests led by John L. Lewis. Senator Robertson says the aim is to determine if the plan violates anti trust laws and could consolidate control over prices and mines amid a week of strikes by United Mine Workers.
