The 78th Miners Union Day celebration drew thousands to Columbia Gardens in Butte for a day of festivities and the annual first aid contest. The Samplers of The Anaconda Company won with 2,490 points, just shy of a perfect score, followed by Mountain Con and Anselmo teams in close competition.

Montana Youth Drowns in Bouchard Lake Reservoir
Howard Dale Warnken, 19, of Superior, drowned Wednesday in the Bouchard Lake reservoir while swimming offshore after cramps struck him. A 16-year-old companion pulled him to a raft, and first aid was given for nearly an hour before he could not be revived. He is survived by his father, Robert Warnken.

96 Oil Lease Bids Approved by Montana Land Board

Monsignor Pirnat Dies After Long Illness in Anaconda
The Rt. Rev. Msgr. John Baptist Pirnat aged 83 and pastor emeritus of St. Peter Parish died Wednesday at St. Ann after a long illness.
