Creston Girl Drowns in Lake

Judy Huston 16 of Creston drowned Friday afternoon while swimming with five companions at Peterson Lake east of Creston. Her body was recovered about five minutes later by Don Strucek 19 of Bigfork. The party included her brothers Joe and John Huston and sister Carol and two other girls. It is the second Flathead County drowning of the year.

Guerrillas Lose Battle for Town

U S paratroopers recaptured Dong Xoai 6 miles north of Saigon after two days of heavy fighting. Government and Viet Cong casualties exceeded 1,000, with U S air strikes and helicopter lifts aiding a relief effort for a 200 to 300 man government battalion.

Bank Killer Duane Pope Surrenders After Slayings

Duane Pope, 22, who had been sought for the June 4 Farmers State Bank killings in Big Springs Nebraska, surrendered in Kansas City after fleeing. He is accused of killing bank president Andreas Kjeldgaard and cashier Glen Hendricks and bookkeeper Lois Hothan and wounding Franklin Kjeldgaard, with $1598 taken. Pope, a recent McPherson College graduate, flew from Las Vegas to Kansas City before being captured.

Butte Miner Receives Holmes Medal for Heroism

James Francis Novak a 22 year old miner from 1111 W Park Butte received a gold medal for heroism at the Montana Mines of the Stauffer Chemical Co Maiden Rock in front of about 100 miners including John Turk 48 of 3160 Amherst Butte Turk applauded loudest Novak saved his partner from a collapsing cav ing in the East LaMarche workings on Dec 10 1964 The medal was presented by L D Knill of Salt Lake City a Bureau of Mines official Also present Donald Martin from Salt Lake Kn oll will serve as arbitrator at the Miners Union Day first aid contest Knill praised the Stauffer Co safety record and read the medal inscription Continued Page 2 Col 3

Needful Boy Gets a Hand in Kansas City Area

Terry Nalley born without a left wrist receives a custom artificial wire and felt hand fitting a baseball glove. The hand and glove were lost at a lunch counter but later mailed from Kansas City with a Kansas City Star clipping reading pick up by mistake glad to find owner. Terry tried it on and smiled.

Sunday Observed As Miners Union Day In Butte

Butte Miners Union No. 1 members observe Sunday June 13 as a paid holiday marking the union’s 1878 founding. Most city businesses close Monday while Sunday events at Columbia Gardens include an first aid contest rides and ice cream. Some mines and certain services operate Sunday or Monday with restrictions and notices from the Anaconda Co. about specific work days.

Youth 20 Dies After Near Livingston Pool Accident

A 20 year old North Dakota youth, Daniel Clifford Brown, died near Livingston after a fall from an inner tube in an indoor hot springs pool. Park County Coroner John Davis ruled suffocation from vomit lodged in the windpipe as the cause. Brown had hitchhiked 40 miles from Columbus, Montana, to reach the pool and walked a mile over a gravel road to the site.
