In Philadelphia on June 11 Byron Nelson birdied the final hole for a 68 to tie Craig Wood in the national open playoff. Denny Shute placed third with 76 and was eliminated. A spectator was struck on the head by Wood’s second shot on the 18th, causing a severe scalp laceration.
Frank X. Anaconda resident Erick Frederickson, 33, disappeared after his car plunged into the swollen Big Hole river two miles east of Dewey. His companion Pauline Brady, 23, survived and is hospitalized in Anaconda. Searchers on foot, boats, and grappling hooks scoured the riverbank and water, but dark water and deep holes hinder the effort. The body may drift for miles, and officials plan continued searches.
Indiana reports three deaths and Wisconsin and Ohio one each from a storm crossing six states. High winds, rain, and lightning damaged hundreds of homes, upended utilities, and felled numerous trees. Washington reports the U S national income declined to 64 billion dollars in 1938, down 11 percent from 72 billion in 1937. Commerce department attributes the drop to falling prices and reduced production, noting the figure is 16 billion below Roosevelt's annual goal of 80 billion.
In Hyde Park New York on June 1 President Roosevelt and King George VI knelt together in St. James Episcopal Church. Queen Elizabeth Mrs. Roosevelt and Roosevelt's mother Mrs. Delano Roosevelt were in the front pew as royal and American leaders participated in the church service.

Butte merchants expect a busy day as housewives shop for the Miners union holiday tomorrow. Miners and families travel to Columbia Gardens for a sports program and dance with the Montana State band providing music. The union parade leaves the courthouse at 10, crowds head to the Gardens at 1, and special bus service is arranged by John M. Evans of Butte City Lines.
