Jefferson River floods near Twin Bridges disrupts power lines

The Jefferson River surged and snagged a utility pole south of Twin Bridges, causing a 1 hour outage as Montana Power Co. crews on rafts freed tangled high voltage lines. Repairs extended 10 hours with lines along the bank slated for revamping after water recedes.

Teenager dies in Anaconda area car crash

A 16 year old, Randy Alishouse of Anaconda Job Corps Center, died in a single car crash west of Anaconda while attempting to pass another vehicle on Highway 10 A. Three other youths were injured, Bonnie Roe 14 and Vicki Roe 15 both Philipsburg, and Kenneth Lambky 17, all treated for injuries in Missoula, Anaconda, and Butte hospitals. The Friday night accident occurred about 11:30 p m and increased Deer Lodge County’s fatality toll for the year to 134.

Miners Union Day Mostly History in Butte USA

Miners Union Day remains mostly ceremonial with some closures and open work in parts of Butte. Berkeley Pit, underground mines and some shops will take the day off. Weed Concentrator and lead-precipitation complex operate. City services vary. banks open, supermarkets closed Tuesday, city hall open, garbage not collected, courthouse open but union workers rest. Weather: 70 degrees, 40 percent.

Mineral taxation costly for Butte

The Anaconda Co. has mined copper, silver and gold on Butte’s Richest Hill and paid only surface property taxes and a state license tax while paying no net proceeds tax in five of 12 years. Company losses in 1971 and prior years mean no net proceeds tax due in 1972, amid a boom bust pattern for Silver Bow County.

Boys State ends with reform bills enacted

Dillon AP reports the Montana Boys State Convention at Western Montana College concluded with a flurry of reform bills. The enacted measures include a state lottery study commission no fault insurance judicial selection reform stricter drunken driving penalties a state environmental agency and higher cigarette taxes. Resolutions push Montana control over water resources and appoints a Montana Association of Student Councils leader as a non voting advisor to the State Board of Regents.

Butte man saves lad in Big Hole

A Butte fisherman, Bob Ferko, saved 15 year old Dave Smith from a flood swollen Big Hole River above Ralston after a station wagon slid into the water. Driver Smith suffered a shoulder injury while 14 year old Steve Castren received a cut hand.

Butte optometrist buys old hospital site

Old St. James Hospital at Idaho and Silver in Butte, dating to 1881, was sold by the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth to Dr. Leonard Vainio, a local optometrist. Sale papers signed last week, official price undisclosed, with prior California firm bid of 150000 reportedly rejected after health department renovation demands. The building now houses several community clinics and services under tenanted occupancy after years as a 65 to 200 bed facility transformed in 1960 and 1943 remodels. Man with history of sex crimes commits suicide in jail cell

West Palm Beach Florida AP David Des Marais a twice convicted sex offender telegraphed he would kill himself rather than return to jail after his request for treatment was denied. He hanged himself with a torn sheet in his cell the Sheriff's Department said.
