Montana School of Mines honored 56th commencement with Horace M. Albright addressing thirty graduates in Museum Hall. He urged mining engineers to act as conservationists of high integrity and vision for the profession.
Mrs James W Gerard widow of the U S ambassador to Germany leaves 10000 to the Montana School of Mines with no stipulations on its use. Fund may aid construction of a College Union Building, alongside other gifts and student awards announced by Dr J R Van Pelt. Gerard, formerly Mary Daly, was a survivor of Marcus Daly’s family. Arthur E Adams receives long standing honors as special recognition at commencement and retires as dean of students after 49 years on campus.
In Afton Wyoming two five year old boys, Arnold Lafayette Adams and Steven Jackson, suffocated in a vacant apartment refrigerator. The mother of Adams and city Police Officer Gordon D. Miller discovered the boys after their prolonged absence worried the parents. The boys were found in a vacant basement apartment owned by Wilford Fluckiger.
The House tentatively approved a 3.8 billion dollar foreign aid measure, cutting over a billion from President Eisenhower’s request. A failed bid to remove Yugoslavia from the program left a 15 million in economic aid and a secret larger military aid amount. The bill advances with a later roll call and faces Senate battles and a possible conference.
Eisenhower's illness stirred concern in Washington as both parties expressed hope it is not serious. Senator Mansfield urged calm and a quick return to work while the stock market wavered on the news. Vice President Nixon offered sympathy and noted similar past episodes as Adlai Stevenson remained active in campaign duties.

He urged Congress to justify any extra payment openly before proceeding with the Missouri River project. Senate Democrats in Montana called the veto a test of fairness toward Indian wards and citizens.
Soviet Premier Bulganin in a letter to President Eisenhower urged the United States Britain and France to join in withdrawing armed forces from Germany. He cited Moscow's plan to reduce the Soviet armed forces by 1 200 000 and accused the UN Disarmament Subcommittee of slowing progress.

President Eisenhower underwent emergency abdominal surgery at 2:59 a.m. EDT Saturday to relieve a lower intestinal blockage. A midnight conference of 13 physicians approved exploratory surgery to determine the obstruction’s cause and relief.

The Senate Appropriations Committee approved an initial 13 million dollars for the Upper Colorado River Development project as part of a 138,961,000 dollar allocation for reclamation construction for the fiscal year starting July 1. The plan lists funding for Flaming Gorge Dam, Glen Canyon, Navajo Dam, and advance irrigation planning, along with allocations for Helena Valley unit, Yellowtail Dam unit, Collbran Project, and Missouri Basin Project components. House figures differ on several line items, and a 5% budget reduction for the Ft. Randall-Grand Island power line was rejected.
Milton S. Eisenhower resigned Friday night as president of Pennsylvania State University effective no later than December 31. The announcement was made at the university while he was in Washington with his ailing brother, the President. He cited personal reasons for stepping down.
