London dispatch reports four United States Air Force airmen remain missing after a B 29 bomber from England plunged into the North Sea off the Norfolk coast during a gunnery flight. Three died and four survived. survivors were rescued and treated in hospital as search efforts continued by eight B 29s, B 17s, RAF planes, ships and a helicopter. The aircraft, from the 72nd Recon Squadron at Sacramento, crashed near Lemon Bank firing range after an engine burst into flames. no enemy fire was reported.
Washington June 8 The Senate passed a measure to empower the government to seize ships boats automobiles or airplanes used by narcotics rings. The Treasury urged the new law as a tool to strike the dope racket by confiscating transportation. The bill moves to the House for quick passage.
In Pears on Georgia four linemen were electrocuted when a breaking power line in a heavy rain sent 2,000 volts into soggy ground. Two other workers escaped injury. The victims, O. A. Odum, C. M. Brooker, N. L. Lilies Jr., and C. L. Brown, were from Waycross and were relocating a high voltage line along a new highway section.
David E. Lilienthal urged freeing the atom from a government monopoly to spur peaceful development. He called for revising the atomic energy law and ending secrecy, arguing private industry should pioneer the new frontier and that military security fears have distorted the national industrial system.

He described underground activity, coded communications, and covert expansion into steel, mining, machinery, and the legal profession, with 54 174 known party members including 25 000 in New York.
Government economist William W. Remington was indicted by a federal grand jury on perjury for stating he never was a Communist. The charge mirrors the Hiss case. Remington, 32, faces up to five years and a $2,000 fine if convicted. He has denied the accusation and promised to appear for arraignment June 13. trial timing remains undetermined.

Gov John W Bonner said welfare funds may run out next February and a 482500 interim appropriation will be sought. increased need and higher living costs prompted the decision while federal relief remains uncertain.
Walter T. Ballard longtime legislator civic worker and friend of Butte’s children died Thursday at 2 45 PM in Los Angeles at the home of a brother in law and sister in law He had suffered a series of strokes since February 1949 and traveled in January to Arizona for health reasons He was born in Philipsburg and rose from banker secretary to a post in the Anaconda Copper Mining abstract department He married Maud Kelsey in 1912 and left a lasting impression on Montana politics and civic life
PRAGUE June 8 A Czechoslovak state court sentenced four persons to death for high treason and espionage for western powers. Thirteen defendants were convicted after an eight day trial. four others received life terms, and five got 15 to 28 years. The court found they liaised with foreign powers, leaked state secrets, and acted as spies, with all pleading guilty or basically so.
The forecast for Butte calls for mostly cloudy Friday with occasional light rain or snow and a rising temperature. Sidney V Phillips longtime Butte resident and retired businessman died Thursday at home after months of illness. He came to Montana forty years ago and built a novelty advertising business, living in Butte the last 35 years. He supported many civic causes including crippled children rehabilitation and Rotary. He belonged to Bagdad temple Shrine and several Masonic bodies. Surviving relatives include a son in law and stepdaughter, grandsons, a sister, and several nieces and nephews. Body at White's funeral home with funeral arrangements later announced.
Committees of the Silver Bow Employers association and the Women s Protective union Local No. 457 announced a new labor agreement for Butte restaurant operators and their employees. The pact runs from May 15, 1950, to May 14, 1951.
