President Roosevelt and King George VI exchanged toasts at a White House garden party ending a day of royal visits. The event highlighted cordial U S British ties with hopes for future peace and cited recent Pacific settlement as an example of peaceful dispute resolution.
Prague untangled as German protectorate imposes drastic police control on Kladno after Sergeant Wilhelm Kriest is shot. German Reichsprotektor Konstantin von Neurath orders curfew, disarms Czech police, dismisses mayor and council, and installs a German commissioner while warning of further measures if the killer is not captured by tomorrow evening.

Berlin reports action against Polish Jews as Warsaw warns of possible retaliation. Krakow notes 2000 Jews moved to a Silesian border point with only about 80 reaching Poland. Jewish groups say relief at border remains strained amid mass expulsions. Over 10,000 Polish Jews are in Germany.
Louis P. Lochner, AP foreign correspondent, described Germany's food pinch from Berlin, noting rationing of coffee at one eighth pound per person weekly and rising prices. He warned shortages reflect wartime hoarding and that a new crisis could emerge after harvests, possibly by mid August.

Billings reports the death of Earthquake a legendary 1535 pound bucking horse owned by Leo Cremer after 18 years in rodeos across the West. Once unridden seven years he became a crowd favorite at large shows and helped build Cremer’s rodeo circuit. Cremer plans a monument at the Shawmut ranch to honor the animal.
President signs the Strategic Minerals bill to build a $100 million reserve and stockpile key metals. Montana outputs manganese tungsten and chrome expected to rise with a $500,000 annual research allotment. Butte Philipsburg plants poised to increase production under defense priorities. The War Department plans $10 million in next year purchases of manganese chromium tungsten and other materials, contingent on appropriation.
Governor Roy F. Ayers named seven members to Montana soil conservation committee created by the 1939 legislature. Appointees include Clyde McKee Bozeman director of the Montana agricultural experiment station J C Taylor Bozeman director of the Montana extension service James B Grierson Myers Rockwood Brown Billings James T Sparling Helena John E Norton Bozeman and Ole Gunderson Power. McKee Taylor Brown Grierson and Sparling hold posts and Norton and Gunderson serve terms tied to the governor. The panel will coordinate soil conservation district programs and work with federal agencies on soil projects.

H M O Brau n supervisor of the county welfare department said checks for old age assistance and aid to dependent children should arrive in Butte some time Friday. He noted a Montana welfare official stated the county checks were mailed from Helena yesterday.
Dissenting officials say funds shortage forced 20 percent reductions in old age assistance. Before cuts the average was 20.55 monthly. June average fell to 17.01. Mrs. Mary J. Dean of Butte filed suit to restore payments to 28 monthly against Administrator I. M. Brandford and the welfare department.
Five year old Krehe Os, son of Mrs. Samuel Osborn, was abducted in San Jose and held for $1600. Nurse Miss Graham Gaylord confessed saying she needed the money and the life of one dear to her. The child and suspect were found unharmed in the Imperial hotel. police had kept the case quiet.

Knights of Pythias and Pythian Sisters in Butte schedule memorial exercises Monday night at the Pythian castle. Rev. Floyd E. Logee will deliver the memorial address. Multiple officers of the Knights and Sisters and the Calanthe lodge choir will participate, with Taps to be sounded by Jack Goggin.
