Butte and surrounding areas benefited from heavy June rains totaling 2.51 inches. City workers battled clogged drains and washed‑out dirt roads with sand and debris piling up in streets.
Police hunt a 50 year old six foot high man linked to arson attempts in Stockton after a Dover hotel blaze that left seven dead and about 20 injured. A lone suspect questioned in custody was not believed responsible. The four story low cost rooming house housed 40 tenants when the fire occurred. The Rev F C Clark died in the flames. his bride of two months survived with serious injuries. Several victims remained unidentified due to severe burns.
The Associated Press reports that weekend traffic crashes pushed national death toll to at least sixty three. Police and highway safety officials noted multiple fatal incidents across several states during the weekend period.
Frank Roe a Butte policeman and law student at Montana State University returned last night from Missoula and will go on shift tonight.
Washington reports growing belief that a conference accord on the tax act is unlikely before Congress reconvenes. House conferees join eight Senate members to seek a final agreement, with both sides not expected to meet before Tuesday amid a lull in floor fighting. Proponents of housing and ship subsidy legislation plan to press ahead tomorrow.

Ray Murphy American Legion chief and Rep Wright Patman predict a national business spurt as veterans spend checks, with unofficial estimates placing 40 to 60 percent of bonus bonds cashed.
Sixteen inmates escaped from the St. Peter state insane asylum criminal ward after attacking five guards. Fourteen remained at large as national guardsmen joined local and state officers in a search along the Minnesota river bottomlands. The ringleader, Lawrence De Vol alias George Barton, was transferred from Stillwater penitentiary and formerly linked to Alvin Karpis.
The outlook calls for showers on Monday with a likely continuation into Tuesday. Cooler conditions are expected in the southeast portion on Monday, followed by a warmer trend on Tuesday.
Soaking showers eased drought fears as Montana received widespread rain from Miles City to Havre. Billings and Great Falls reported half an inch, Glendive .71 inches, Bitter Root and surrounding valleys soaked, Missoula saw 16 hours of drizzle, with forecast for more showers tonight.
Helena Montana June 7. Scott P Hart maintenance engineer for the Montana highway commission warned motorists to drive carefully over MacDonald Pass after rains caused minor earth slides on the east slope. Traffic is moving though crews clear the road and it may take two days to remove the dirt and rocks. Hart urged patience and careful driving to avoid difficulties.
Paris reports Colonel Charles A. Lindbergh his wife and son Jon likely will end exile and return to the United States in August. De Torres, a French aviator friend, says the Lindberghs have lived in England since secretly leaving last winter to avoid publicity over Hauptmanns trial and safety concerns for Jon. They resided at Long Barn near Seven Oaks, Kent, with rare public appearances.
Republican delegates at the Cleveland convention debated a proposed constitutional amendment for a federal minimum wage with former President Hoover signaling support. The discussion, amid worries over farm, tariff, and monetary planks, centered on how far the party should liberalize its platform and possibly abandon long held principles.
Edward C. Day 73 a Montana Supreme Court jurist died in a San Diego hospital after two years illness. A Helena attorney born in Kentucky he held several Masonic and Scottish Rite ranks in Montana and was a past active member of the supreme council A A Scottish Rite. He was born March 20 1861 in Cynthiana Harrison County Kentucky to Alfred and Mary Francis Carson Day. Continued on Page 2 Co 8.
The Kansas delegation to the Republican national convention met to draft an agricultural plank acceptable to the party regardless of its candidate. Senator Capper and former Senator Henry Allen led the effort joined by William Allen White of Emporia. They said the plank would be a key convention function and avoid a London farm plank while seeking input from other agricultural state delegations.
Delegates arriving for the convention heard that the Kansas strategy panel will give all favorite sons a one ballot run to avoid grudges in November as the GOP aims to oust the New Deal. London floor chief Little Joe Martin announced the plan while anti Landon forces sought reinforcements. John D. M. Hamilton indicated the campaign would not rush the second ballot.
Montana's eight delegate contingent arrives as Montana caucus nears. Early forecasts suggest Landon may secure six votes on the first ballot with two split between Sen. Borah and Col. Knox. National committeeman Scanlan calls the delegation largely a dark horse.
Art Johnson and Marcus Quinn escaped with minor injuries when a trainer flight at Butte airport ended with a crash. Johnson, a student flyer, was treated for head cuts at St. James hospital before returning home. Quinn suffered only minor scratches. A gust of wind allegedly flipped the dual controlled pusher plane during takeoff, sending it down. Attendants rushed to help as both men walked away from the wreck.
