Elevator operator Eddie Kowalski testified that a hotel engineer rushed in with an extinguisher but fled as flames spread rapidly through the La Salle hotel. Witnesses described efforts to battle the blaze and noted authorities closed five night clubs and two Loop theaters for fire hazard violations as the death toll rose to 59.

Mrs. John Donovan aged 71 from Aliquippa Pa died beside the road near Vaughn New Mexico when an ambulance en route to Albuquerque caught fire after the vehicle was overturned by a whirlwind. Her daughter Rose Lee escaped unharmed. Mrs Donovan had lived in Albuquerque until three years ago.

William OConnell Former Flathead Sheriff Dies
William Henry O Connell 1027 Hornet a longtime Great Northern railroad agent and former Flathead county sheriff died Thursday after a lengthy illness. He served as Kalispell sheriff 1908 to 1912 and is survived by three sons two daughters in law a daughter a brother and a sister in law among others. The body lies at the Daly Shea chapel and will be sent to Kalispell for burial.
