Nazi authorities arrested 11 priests in Munich after Catholics in Berlin read a pulpit statement denying widespread priestly immorality. Father Rupert Mayer, a World War I veteran, was among those seized as the church defends itself against charges of corruption.
Senate committee chair Byrd urges withholding presidential control over regulatory agencies like the Federal Trade Commission and Interstate Commerce Commission to avoid turning them into political footballs. Brookings report notes these boards act for Congress, not the President, and deserve limited executive power.
The document includes a Treasury letter listing 11 tax evasion devices from a 1936 returns review. It divides them into eight moral fraud cases and three where the law allows avoidance of taxes. The President’s comments do not separate the two groups.

United Automobile Workers workers at Ford Motor Company Richmond plant met in Oakland to ballot on returning to work after rejecting a National Labor Relations Board backed peace plan. The plan offered prompt grievance handling and withdrawal of discrimination charges but did not grant union recognition. The plant had been closed for two weeks.
Youngstown Ohio June 6 President Roosevelt was asked to day to bring the nation’s big steel strike to a peaceful end as gunfire shattered the Sabbath. The dispatch notes renewed violence and calls for federal intervention to halt the conflict between workers and steel mills.
Vatican prelates said the German episcopacy initiated the declaration read in churches in Germany. They stressed the Vatican was informed and that the pope was aware of the move.
Investigators narrowed the identity of the man who collapsed and died on West Mercury Street Saturday night to John Richter of 15 West Porphyry Street. Richter recalled meeting a man who came to buy old gold and later asked for a five dollar loan, claiming he had wired home for more funds. The visitor, later identified as Anderson, was believed to be traveling in a small coupe and may have no fixed address.
Samuel Sprague rural resettlement administrator survived a device attached to his car ignition after loaning the vehicle to Robert Lorenz. Lorenz suffered a broken leg and concussion. Fern Jensen was lightly injured. The blast blew off the car roof. debris spread 100 feet. Sprague had received threatening letters tied to his rural resettlement reports.
Amelia Earhart reached Natal Brazil this morning after a 287 mile flight from Fortaleza in two hours six minutes. Natal is the jump-off point for her Atlantic crossing and the easternmost Brazilian port, about 1900 miles from Dakar French Senegal, her transatlantic destination.
In New York several men pressure a west side housewife demanding $2 for each employed girl or $25 for protection. The resident contacted detectives and the would-be racketeers returned to collect, but the plan was halted by police surveillance.
Fires raged across at least six fronts in Washington as heat and low humidity escalated danger. The largest blaze covered more than 3,000 acres in Grays Harbor county south of Seattle, described by forest rangers as one of the worst for the season.

Mrs. E A Wilson of 919 South Main suffered a severe laceration to her right leg in a crash near the Sunrise Inn on the Butte Anaconda highway. She and Mrs. Frank Green of 647 A Travonia were in the same car that collided with a vehicle said to be driven by W H Petritz of Anaconda. Petritz and Green were treated and dismissed from St James hospital, while Mrs. Wilson remained admitted. Separate, another collision on Harrison avenue injured Thomas Ferriter of 2225 George Street and Mrs. Nellie Spritzer of 2907 Kennedy Street with Ferriter reporting a cut lip and Spritzer an injured right ankle.
At 2 o clock Monday afternoon Montana State University will confer 219 degrees marking the largest class in the state campus history. Two hundred twelve bachelor of arts and seven master of arts degrees will be awarded to graduates including Tom M. Mitchell of Dayton and Russel V. Anderson of Rhame with other entrants listed.
