Australian and Dutch air units claim the sinking of two and probably three Japanese submarines off Australia's east coast, bringing the total sunk in less than a month to six or seven with multiple ships and fleets involved.
New Delhi reports thousands of Allied troops and flyers have landed in India from a massive convoy likely the largest to leave England. American P-40 Kittyhawks are now based at Indian airfields as Japanese forces push 125 miles up the Chindwin toward India, though no offensive against India is indicated.
United States heavy bombers led by Capt. Frank D. Sharp attacked Rangoon harbor in a daylight raid on June 4. Japanese fighters engaged the force, two enemy planes were shot down, one US aircraft failed to return, and overall result was not determined due to heavy overcast.
Naval officers report a decreasing submarine menace across 1200 miles from Canada to Jacksonville Florida as efforts speed up fuel deliveries to New England and more protection is promised for vessels between Jacksonville and the Mexican border.
Washington June 5. The State department announced that passengers scheduled to reach New York Monday on the Swedish liner Gripsholm include William Franti and Sonja Franti of Butte Montana.

The War Production Board forms a nine member food requirements committee led by Secretary Claude Wickard to allocate food supplies among civilians, the armed forces, and allies. The plan estimates ample total supply this year despite possible shortages in sugar canned goods and fats, with a joint British American food board to be formed and potential rationing if shortages arise.
The War Production Board announces an extended drive to increase production of nonferrous metals, led by Leslie A. Miller. A rally on Miners' Day June 13 in Butte, Montana will launch the effort with WPB chair Donald M. Nelson to speak by telephone. The plan involves copper, lead and zinc branches with input from unions and major industry groups.
London dispatch reports the Royal Air Force conducted a large scale offensive along the French channel coast with four separate sorties. American built bombers attacked Ostend Le Havre Morlaix and Lannion while over 100 Spitfires struck Abbeville diversionary thrusts. The missions encountered light anti aircraft fire and all planes returned.
The Butte unit of the United Service Organizations reports receipts exceeding $3,000 as the drive toward a $15,000 goal continues. American Women’s Voluntary Services will staff booths in the business district with local chairmen selecting assistants. The effort to contact employees in major firms started Friday morning and will proceed until officials and workers are given a chance to contribute.
The Chinese high command said Japan sent 100000 troops in fresh onslaughts against Chuhsien’s walled defenses. Two days of fighting on three sides cost the Japanese about 10000 casualties. Tokyo aims to knockout China and open overland links to Indo China Thailand and Burma.
President Roosevelt announced war declarations against Bulgaria Hungary and Rumania as the United States formally enters war with Germany Italy Japan and the three Balkan states. He said the Balkan declarations were compelled by Adolf Hitler and not by the people.

In Alton Illinois on June 5 a local coin collector described his frustration after discovering a 10 pfennig German coin among coins from parking meters. He noted such foreign pieces are rare but not unheard of and urged proper receptacles for odd encounters.
Forecast notes only a small change in temperatures with a high near 62 degrees and a low around 42 degrees. Friday’s conditions remain mild with light winds and a gentle diurnal swing.

Washington June U P The military pay bill deadlock ends as House and Senate conferees approve 46 dollar monthly base pay for privates and apprentice seamen retroactive to June 1, replacing 21 and 30 dollar levels. A compromise sets privates first class and seamen second at 52 dollars monthly, with House and Senate ratification expected next week.
