Gemini 9 drifts with low fuel as astronauts Cernan and Stafford take a 10 hour rest delaying Cernan’s 22 hour spacewalk. The pair abandon linking nose to target rendezvous, but complete three searches and a satellite rendezvous before postponing the walk. Cernan, a 32 year old rookie, plans the long orbital stroll Sunday morning at about 17 fifty miles per hour.
Flight controllers warned of no extension to Sunday’s walk if needed as Gemini 9 nears fuel limits. Stafford and Cernan, tired after two days in space, took a 22 hour rest while awaiting a final attempt to remove a strange protective shroud from their target. Ground control then sent the satellite through gyrations to shake the shroud, but it held firm and the craft parked near the object. Stafford fired jets and disappeared from view, ending three successful hunts of the monster-like target after a night of uneasy sleep.
Wellington D. Rankin, Montana attorney, ranch and real estate magnate, and longtime Republican figure, died after an operation and embolism. He built a vast empire, owned hundreds of thousands of acres and thousands of cattle, and was Jeannette Rankin’s brother. He had sought U S Senate and House seats and served as Republican National Committeeman during Eisenhower years. Rankin was born in 1884 and educated at the University of Montana.
Butte officials face requests from both police and fire departments for higher pay as the new municipal budget nears. Officers seek a $24 to $25 monthly raise plus a $1.20 daily rise for police and a $25 monthly raise for firemen, along with a $2.50 personal insurance allowance. City Hall notes current firemen insurance is capped at $7.50 per man by state law. The requests have been sent to the Ways and Means Committee for consideration amid possible revenue or cost-cutting actions.
In Saigon the South Vietnamese government warned that students arrested during anti government demonstrations would receive military training and be sent to fight the Viet Cong. The DOA note follows a week of self immolations by Buddhists and new anti government protests.
Butte officials announced the annual Miners Union Day for Monday June 13 at Columbia Gardens. Highlights include a first aid contest by Anaconda Co and a free dance with rides and treats at noon. William Gately chairs the planning committee with many members and officers named for the event.

Montana Tech Alumni Association banquet elected Roy G. MacFarland president and Robert P. Corbett vice president with officers from Butte including John A. Alexander Rayworth F. Howe and Jack Harvey. Edward J. Renouard received the first alumni hall of fame award at the Prudential Federal Savings Auditorium with toastmaster Jack Harvey.
A late Friday storm dumped up to two feet of wet snow in northwest Montana, hitting Glacier National Park and surrounding areas. Whitefish saw heavy damage with over 11 000 trees damaged and power lines cut, with losses estimated from 50 000 to 100 000 dollars. Great Northern trains ran two hours late, Going to the Sun Road was closed at Logan Pass, and Avalanche Camp evacuated as snow piled along U S Highway 2.
Surveyor 1, the 620 pound lunar probe at the Sea of Storms landing site, keeps snapping about 2000 pictures. At Pasadena's Jet Propulsion Laboratory a spokesman notes its perfect condition and says scientists will re examine landing pods and pursue refined wide angle surveys of the surrounding area.
