Mines students to receive 51 degrees at 49th commencement
Fifty one Montana School of Mines students from the United States and five foreign countries will receive degrees Wednesday night at the 49th annual commencement in the Library Museum building. Dr. James Boyd of the United States Bureau of Mines will receive an honorary doctor of engineering and deliver the address.

Montana Attorney General Arnold H. Olsen launched a three pronged campaign to crack down on gambling. He asked 56 county attorneys to abolish illegal gambling seize all unlicensed slot machines and move on nonprofit social clubs to seize their machines and prosecute owners. He outlined standards for legitimate private clubs and cited a District Court ruling: nonprofit social clubs cannot legally operate slot machines.

Butte Boy 14 killed in trailer accident near city dump
Stanley Neisess, 14, son of Mr and Mrs Joseph Neisess of 314 Oxford, died after a trailer broke loose from a truck and overturned near the city dump. Coroner R E Sayatovic identified the cause as a fractured skull from the trailer striking him as it righted. The driver, Norman H Stapleton of 621 Utah, had taken Neisess, Ivan McKee and Chester Bower on the return trip to unload tires. The mishap occurred about a quarter mile beyond Montana street. Investigating officers included Highway Patrolmen Herb Slack and Al Boehme and Deputy Sheriff Stanley Fitz.

A Woodland house fire killed Mrs. Sarah Gill, 78, and her grandchildren Patricia Ponton, 4, and Ray Pope, 7, early Saturday. Three others were injured including fireman Harold Tenhinfeld, Patricia Ponton’s mother, and another daughter Lois, 5. The blaze at Mrs. E. F. White’s home caused unknown origin.
