The government reports May unemployment fell to 6.9 percent from 7.0 and total employment rose by about 400000. Wholesale prices rose 0.4 percent in May, the smallest gain since August, while farm prices declined 2.3 percent, easing overall wholesale inflation.
Dillon Beaverhead National Forest outlines a plan to restrict around 170 miles of roads and 67 miles of trails in its 2.5 million acre area to protect resources and safety. About 3,811 miles of roads and 1,565 miles of trails would remain open to all uses, with seasonal closures and limited routes in several areas.
Montana official Mike Greely urged Friday for the creation of citizens action councils to assist law enforcement. He argued crime prevention rests with private citizens as much as government and noted polls show crime as the top issue. He touted a state crime lab and an interdepartmental communications network as part of new prevention programs.
Butte school trustees set Tuesday July 12 as the next election day for elementary and high school mill levies after defeat of current levies by about two to one. Montana enacts a new open meeting law effective July 1 expanding access to meetings while allowing some closures for privacy. Rep. Mike Meloy notes compromises made to pass the bill in 1977 and predicts future court questions on notices minutes and privacy versus public disclosure. The measure defines meetings as gatherings of a public agency’s quorum and applies to state and local bodies funded with public funds.
The House voted 310 to 2 to create a new energy department with a five year life unless renewed by Congress. The bill, trimmed from Carter's proposal, would consolidate scattered programs and abolish three agencies. A conference with the Senate is needed before submission to the President.
Montana Power Co executive Jack Burke urged the Public Service Commission to grant an immediate temporary rate increase of about 48 million dollars a year to cover losses in the natural gas business and fund Colstrip plant costs. The move could raise a typical home bill about 16 dollars monthly, while a reduced 25 million figure was also proposed as fair by a consumer witness.
