In Montana primary results Kuchera leads Renne by about 1 000 votes in Yellowstone County as 11 000 Democratic ballots are counted. Republican Babcock posts 16 269 votes with a long GOP history and ties to Nutter era.
James D Freebourn and David L Holland led the contest for district judge in Silver Bow County with a strong primary turnout. Ongoing reporting showed OConnell and Gabse winning nominations while Shugrue, a first time candidate and Butte School teacher, trailed. Heavy rain earlier reduced early voting but sunny afternoon conditions boosted turnout to about 78 percent of the county's 21 452 registered voters.
A Butte woman died in a car crash southwest of Polson, Montana, with several passengers injured. The report names Frank Sorrell and Pierce Mitchell as involved, describing the vehicle leaving its lane and a passenger being thrown from the car onto a bridge. Continued details reference Page 2.
Henry H. Anderson of Libby built a growing lead for the Democratic nomination as Montana treasurer after early returns from cities with voting machines. The former Libby mayor and chiropractor led Norman Giles 17,643 to 4,437 with other candidates Lag Towle Gectea and Jack Quilico in the field.
In Helena AP reports Sen. Mike Mansfield won a landslide as Blewett led GOP hopefuls with 9,902 votes. The tally across 329 precincts shows Rosell 3,798 and Brewster 2,861, while Monaghan 58, a Butte attorney, last served in 1936 as a young U.S. Representative.
Two lawyers led Montana party nominations for lieutenant governor. Democrat Richard V. Bottomly and Republican Ted James topped early returns, with Bottomly at 10 705 votes and James at 6 773 among credible totals amid rivals.
Helena AP report shows Paul Cannon moving ahead of Jack Holmes in the Democratic race for auditor. Cannon, a former lieutenant governor, leads by about 7 000 votes with totals around 22 600 to 15 620.
Masons begin convocation in Butte with meetings at the Masonic Temple and Finlen Hotel. Knights York Cross of Honor and Royal Arch Knight Templar Priesthood join leaders Wilbur R. Squires and Harry Bennetts in events.
Incumbent Harriet Miller appears set to face C R Anderson in November for state superintendent of public instruction. Miller led in Democratic primaries with 18 226 votes to 8 785 for Clyde C Hard es and Anderson won 6 544 to 5 072 for L Thomas Eaton. Anderson, Helena schools chief, runs as a Republican for the post once held by Mary Condon.
Balloting shows Davis leading state senator contest with 1 127 votes, Keenan 932 Emmons 489 Gurski 164 Dickson 144. in first district Dunne leads with 1 214 as Pat Swee reeleption runs third for the county commission and Vanisko trails.
Gov. Nelson Rockefeller edged ahead of Barry Goldwater in northern California as NBC and AP reported mixed results. With 65 percent of precincts counted, Rockefeller led Goldwater narrowly. CBS and ABC declared Goldwater winner on projections. Salinger led Democrats in California while Cranston trailed in the 12-man race.
Republican Wayne Montgomery led early returns for western Montana’s congressional nomination, with 2 034 votes to 1 348 for Edna Hinman as 57 of 379 precincts reported. Incumbent Arnold Olsen and James Battin faced no opposition in the eastern district race. Deschamps, a Missoula rancher, was mentioned as a potential spoiler.
At 12 30 a m Montana earlier results list Democratic and Republican tallies for U S Senate and House races, governor and other statewide posts. Among notes US House 2nd District Democratic lead for Kelleher Toole trails. Battin leads Republican race Unclear totals reflect partial precinct reporting with multiple candidates and unopposed races.
