Fair conditions prevail in Butte with warm temperatures. Today’s forecast reaches 84 degrees and 50 night. Wednesday is expected to stay in the 80s with mild evenings.
Montana attorney Charles F. Moses argues the governor, not the attorney general or courts, should decide liquor board membership. Moses contends removal for cause is governor’s power and that a nonfeasance charge cannot prove willful neglect. The dispute centers on removal provisions and nonfeasance claims in a civil suit led by Attorney General Robert L. Woodahl.
More than 300 Montana attorneys and judges are expected at the 82nd MBA convention in Butte June 25 to 27. The theme is Honoring the Judiciary with state and federal bench honorees. Featured speakers include Cullen Smith of Waco Texas and Federal Circuit Judge Edwin A. Tamm.
The Peruvian government says more than 30,000 people were killed in the northern Peru earthquake. Air reports describe entire valleys flooded by dam breaks and landslides, with Chimbote among the hardest hit and Huaraz leveled. The quake measured 7.75 on the Richter scale, and authorities appeal for aid as communications fail across the region.
Sen. Margaret Chase Smith warned of a national sickness of repression from both radical right and radical left. She recalled her 1950s critique of McCarthy and denounced sensationalism on networks and campuses. She warned extremism drives polarization and that Americans may choose repression over anarchy. Raymond L. Robertson Jr., 20, of Butte, died serving in Southeast Asia. A Butte High School graduate of 1968, he held the rank of Private First Class and is survived by his parents and sister Barbra. He was the 19th Butte man and 219th Montanan killed in the Vietnam era.
The Supreme Court delayed a ruling on the death penalty, blocking executions for now and ensuring Judge Blackmun joins the bench next week. The Maxwell case goes back to Arkansas for a jury exclusion hearing while arguments are set for fall on California and Ohio murder cases. Maxwell, a Black man, was sentenced to death for raping a white Hot Springs woman in 1962.
More than 250 bids from five firms were read at a Monday night council meeting for 16 city parks and a tennis court resurfacing project. Base bids plus alternates were included with bids taken under advisement.
