William R. Bennett 48 of Butte, a railroad engineer, halted a train at West Granite Street to pull a child from danger. Timothy O Dell, 2, wandered near tracks and escaped injury. Bennett had previously saved Mark Erickson in June 1962 earning Carnegie Medal and multiple honors.

Johnson orders 2000 Marines pulled from Dominican Republic
President Johnson announced the withdrawal of about 2,000 U.S. Marines from the Dominican Republic as the communist threat there persists. He noted the Reds remain active in several areas while commanders on the scene recommended the reduction. Whitehall Man Dies in Crash After Speeding
Gienna McAlevy a Whitehall bartender died when his car smashed into a concrete railroad overpass west of Whitehall on US 10. The coroner said he apparently fell asleep at the wheel as a German shepherd passenger also died. The crash occurred about 5:30 am and was found by a motorist an hour later. McAlevy had moved to Whitehall from Nebraska in 1964 and worked briefly for Peter Kiewit Sons Construction before becoming a bartender. He is survived by his mother Hazel of Broken Bow Neb and several siblings. He was Montana’s 87th traffic fatality of the year. Investigating officers were William L. Dove and Oscar Buhl Jr.
