Montana plan approved except sulfur oxide control failure

Montana rivers rise as snowmelt swells basins

The Helena National Weather Service reports high temperatures increasing snowmelt runoff in the Missouri Headwater and tributaries. The Big Hole near Divide and Melrose targets crest just above flood stage Friday, with Jefferson Madison Gallatin and Missouri above Toston rising slowly. The Sun River also rises toward flood stage, with minor lowland overflows anticipated.

Clean-up plans get fed okay

Washington AP reports the nation received orders to clean up air pollution with full or partial approvals for state antipollution plans. Only nine states and three jurisdictions had full approval. forty-one had partial. Ruckelshaus must issue federal rules by July 31 to replace disapproved portions.

Protester Snoozes as Warship Sails Under Blockade Plan

In Bremerton Washington the Navy evaded a planned antiwar blockade as the SS Mohawk loaded with ammunition for Vietnam sailed from Bangor Naval Ammo Depot. Sixteen Seattle protesters set camp at Hood Canal Bridge ready to block the exit with small boats but most left. Louis L. Plett the Montana Standard circulation manager won two first place prizes from the Pacific Northwest International Managers Association at its Lewiston Idaho meeting. He earned engraved plaques for outstanding newspaper promotions and National Newspaper Day display and promotion. Stones endanger Navy planes in Vietnam raids

Navy planes returning from bombing runs over North Vietnam showed wing damage from rocks found on several Corsair bombers aboard the USS Coral Sea off Haiphong. Pilots reported heavy ground fire. some rocks may have been debris from bombs or mortar fired at attackers, with no aircraft lost from the incidents.

1200 Men Lose ABM Jobs in Helena Montana

The 160.9 million ABM project near Helena ends, idling about 1,200 workers and $10 million in equipment. Project manager Edward Rzewnicki said most will be laid off Thursday with two to four hours of show up pay and travel pay. Maintenance will continue briefly, but most activity ends.

Debi Hahn Becomes One of Few Mothers to Join Air Force

Denver AP reports Debi Hahn, 18 and divorced, begins basic training at Lackland AFB Texas on June 9 while her 9 month old son Allen stays at home. She is among the first women with children accepted for Air Force enlistment amid lawsuits over births during service. She plans to complete six weeks of training and pursue an Air Force career.
