On Friday, over 450 B 29s escorted by about 150 Mustang fighters based on Iwo Jima bombed Osaka in daylight, dropping 3 200 tons of fire. It follows a similar Yokohama raid and a prior March Osaka strike, with Osaka described as a highly industrialized heart of Honshu.
Chinese troops reportedly captured Ishan west of Liuchow as they push toward French Indo China. General Wedemeyer said Japan is withdrawing from the trans continental corridor linking forces in China to Indo China and Southeast Asia.
Five American divisions on Okinawa swept across muddy terrain for major gains as forces neared Shuri. Marines and soldiers breached Japanese hill defenses and pressured the central fortifications, with 61,519 enemy casualties reported. Montana's Office of Price Administration will keep issuing sugar ration certificates for home canning despite a national suspension. State director L. M. A. Wass said regional offices in Denver ruled there would be no suspension in the Rocky Mountain region. A survey of local sugar situations is under way to bolster controls and ensure quotas go only to legitimate applicants. The national office allowed regional directors to halt grants where quotas are exceeded.

Montana ranks second nationwide in bond quota attainment, with 57 percent of its goal reached by May 20. Mississippi leads, Alabama third.
London May 31 The United Nations war crimes commission heard that the United States is drafting a list of accused criminals ready for immediate trial. British delegate P H B Kent urged a mass handling method for many offenders linked to concentration camp cruelties while Lord Wright described plans for inter Allied courts and a central advisory bureau to coordinate war crimes work across nations.
U S combat units attached to the eastern air command were withdrawn from the Burma theater after achieving their mission. Ground forces pressing toward Thailand continued to annihilate fragmentary Japanese troops as Maj. Gen. George E. Stratemeyer ceded command. With Rangoon fallen, the air force has no targets, signaling Americans in Southeast Asia will fight only if a Japanese threat to the Burma road reappears.
Lakeview Oregon May 31 Undersecretary Patterson disclosed the May 5 explosion killed a woman and five children during a fishing outing near Bly Oregon. An 11 year old girl spotted the balloon prompting investigation. a high explosive bomb from a fallen Japanese balloon exploded killing Mrs Mitchell Joan Patzke and four other children. Patterson warned the public to avoid strange objects in forests and noted this was the only fatality from long range balloons sent toward the U S in recent months.
In Luzon, guerillas and American troops trap an estimated twenty to thirty thousand Japanese along with heavy enemy losses as they closed on the Cagayan valley. Guerrilla action seizes coastal towns and strengthens encirclement of Japanese forces, with fighting around the Santa Fe corridor and Cagayan river crossings.
Allied air forces including Army Navy and Marine aircraft sank or damaged 12 enemy vessels around Japan. Fourth Marine wing damaged a cargo ship off Tokyo bay while Fleet Air Wing 18 Privteers Liberators and Mariners damaged and sank ships and downed enemy planes south of Honshu and Korea. Additional hits hit Palau Yap Sakishimas and Ryukyus installations as escort carrier planes attacked airfields and barracks Wednesday.
