Questions linger about reclamation of inactive Montana mine
Montana Tunnels Mining has faced a long withdrawal from operations at its open pit near Jefferson City since 2008. On July 17 a federal bankruptcy judge dismissed the Chapter 11 case and rejected conversion to Chapter 7, citing failure to meet plan payments. DEQ officials warned the company could not complete required reclamation or post adequate bond. With $23.7 million in bonds held and a $40.9 million total bond need, the department contemplates forfeiture to fund site maintenance or permit transfer to a successor operator. Potential interest from the Mooney Group and James Mooney was noted.
