In downtown Mexico City mobs of several thousand youths attacked city buses near the central square after federal troops withdrew. Riot police used batons and steel helmets to clear streets as tanks patrolled. 1,116 arrests were reported since anti government demonstrations began.
Tim Babcock will announce whether Montana will reinstate the two mill statewide property tax bringing in roughly 1.7 million for the general fund. The decision rests with the State Board of Equalization amid political debate on sales tax and revenue needs. Babcock also backs Dr. John W. Safford and discusses dairy regulatory tensions and talks to buy KBLL stations, meeting again Wednesday.
The United States posted its largest one year deficit since World War II for fiscal year 1968. The deficit totaled 25.4 billion dollars as expenditures exceeded receipts, wider than earlier estimates and about a third above the January forecast.
Sen. J. W. Fulbright, antiwar Democrat, holds a slim margin in Arkansas renomination results. Winthrop Rockefeller easily tops Sidney C. Roberts for the GOP gubernatorial renomination. In the 1st District, Bill Alexander leads Democrats seeking successor Took Gathings as precincts report. Marion Crank leads in the Democratic governor race with Crank ahead of Bruce Bennett and rivals.
A Spokane couple recounted fending off a mother grizzly with a fly rod near Nox on during a bear encounter in western Montana. The bear charged repeatedly as the man used the rod to strike the animal while his wife climbed a tree. Two young cubs appeared before the bears retreated, amid recent Montana bear killings nearby.
Arthur Lee Roff aged 53 died Tuesday at Durable Wood Products mill when he apparently fell from the top of a forklift he operated. Sheriff Dick Cole said the body was found beside the forklift by mill owner Glenn Reller with no witnesses to the accident. Roff left a widow LaMoyne and five children.
Edward Joseph Palakovich 19 of Anaconda dies from head injuries after a July 20 car crash on Interstates 90 west of Alberton. He and Ed Felde 55 of Butte were in a car that overturned into a ditch striking a tree. Felde died instantly. Palakovich, a Milwaukee Road maintenance man and Eastern Montana College student, is survived by parents, brothers Frank and Thomas, sister Jo Ann, grandmothers Sophia Blaskovich and Helen Palakovich. Requiem Mass at St. Paul Church Thursday 10:30 a.m. Burial Mount Olivet. Rosary at Finnegan Funeral Home Wednesday 7:45 p.m.
The Montana Highway Commission reaffirmed its sign encroachment policy after a Butte delegation urged slower enforcement. John J. Burke Jr. and Mayor Thomas F. Powers pressed to allow contract work on Montana Street and a sign safety project to proceed if owners remove signs. Nass warned federal funding could be at risk if signs remain after deadlines.
The Montana Highway Commission awarded several road and bridge contracts after bid issues and holds. Fred Stranberg of Helena secured a contract amid a reduced bid on a Fergus County bridge project. Madison County fencing bid was withheld for further study, and bids on Valley County work including a Milk River bridge were rejected for rescheduling. Additional approved projects span Cascade to Jefferson counties with Interstate 90 grading and underpass work, including bids by Utility Builders Inc, Frank Gurney Inc, and Brasel and Sums with varied costs.
AP report from Princeton New Jersey notes Nixon ahead of Democrats Eugene McCarthy and Hubert Humphrey in a Gallup Poll taken July 20. Nixon has 40 percent to Humphrey 38 and McCarthy 39, with Rockefeller tied to Humphrey and ahead of McCarthy.
The United Steelworkers ratified a three year contract amid a stormy meeting of about 600 local presidents. While officials touted the deal as the largest wage increase in union history, opponents pressed for a standing vote and cited unresolved local issues. Estimated raises ranged from 85 cents to $1 per hour over three years.
A range fire near Roy Montana scorched 1 200 acres of grassland while a 1 400 acre timber blaze in Helena National Forest near Canyon Ferry Reservoir continued. Crews total about 250 on the lines with air tankers and hundreds of thousands of gallons of retardant deployed. The Helena area blaze grew slowly despite high winds and rugged terrain as authorities estimated containment by Wednesday morning.
