U S B52 bombers pounded the demilitarized zone for a second day as Marine and South Vietnamese troops press Hastings against the North Vietnamese 324th Division. Targets include ammunition dumps and weapon storage with antiaircraft fire heavy near Qui Nhon.
A moose cow and her long-eared calf live with the Bob Jackson ranch herd near Jackson. The calf, found abandoned weeks ago by John Jackson, remains unweaned and supposedly remains with the cow. Game wardens note a cow would not abandon a calf. In Plentywood a burly oil worker shot the mayor in court and wounded a judge and a policeman before dying.
Great Falls area reports July as the deadliest month with 45 traffic deaths, surpassing the prior record of 44 set in 1955. The victim, 45 year old Jean B. Rogers of Utica, died from head and shoulder injuries after her car left the road east of Great Falls while she apparently slept. The year’s traffic toll reaches 158, up from 145 a year earlier.
Temperatures climbed into the high 90s with 100 at Belgrade and 97 in Helena as Montana baked on Saturday. Readings reached 99 in Missoula Miles City Livingston and Billings while Cut Bank logged 88. No rain fell though clouds arrived. showers are forecast Sunday mainly along southern and eastern borders. Cooler air from Alberta edges southward with lows from 36 in West Yellowstone to 66 in Miles City.
Frank H. Dunkle, head of the Fish and Game Department, says the Jefferson River drought is a serious local issue mainly affecting irrigators and rough fish. He notes trout are less threatened, and cites Reichle Dam as a potential fix but questions guaranteed flows to all users. The river runs dry near Lahood Park and Three Forks, with winter snow and spring rains missing this year.
A forest fire in the Crazy Mountains 60 miles east of Helena charred about 1000 acres of heavy timber and remained out of control Saturday night. About 500 firefighters guarded lines as winds and heat hampered efforts.
