Babcock to Drive Golden Spike for Alder Gulch Railway
Gov Tim Babcock will drive the golden spike today to inaugurate the Alder Gulch Shortline Railroad linking Nevada City and Virginia City. The two mile narrow gauge line marks the gulch first rail operation with a 3 PM ceremony, fireworks, flag raising, and a 19 gun salute.

Old Park Stagecoach Driver Gardiner Gilpatrick Dies at 91
Gardiner Pat Gilpatrick died in a Big Timber rest home at age 91. Born October 26, 1873 in Greeley California, he drove stagecoaches in Yellowstone for Shaw & Powell and later became transportation manager. He farmed in Shields Valley, worked for the Northern Pacific, and retired in 1955. He married Ida Kumke in 1915 and moved to Livingston in 1924. Funeral Monday at 3:30 in Franzen Chapel with burial at Mountain View Cemetery. Survivors include nieces Esther Richardson and Viola Gallagher of Livingston.

Suellen Evans 21 a University of North Carolina coed was stabbed to death on campus in Chapel Hill as she walked through the botanical garden. She died on arrival at North Carolina Memorial Hospital. Evans from Mooresville was studying home economics and attended a Greensboro university branch during the second summer session.

Viet Cong guerrillas struck the Cao Lanh training center and town on the Cao Lanh River 75 miles southwest of Saigon, killing many and damaging fortifications.
