Forest Fire In Bitter Root District Expands With Reinforcements
A massive forest fire in the Magruder District of Bitter Root National Forest grows rapidly as 600 more men are sent to the line, bringing total crews to over 700. Anaconda Girl and Philipsburg Boy Sweep State Fair Prizes
Connie Kelly, 16, of Anaconda and Robert R. Greenbeck, 17, of Philipsburg won the top prizes in the Anaconda Co. scientific program at the State Fair in Great Falls. Kelly took first in the senior high school division with $500. Greenbeck was second for $250. Third and fourth went to Michael Anthony, 17, of Great Falls and Roger Hagen, 18, of Kalispell. Bride Drowns in Boat Capsize on White River
Ima Jean Poynter helped into marriage just hours earlier but died when an 18 foot cabin cruiser carrying the wedding party capsized on the White River in Indianapolis. Nine others were tossed overboard and rescued by nearby boats. Poynter was trapped inside the cabin.

Anaconda Cafe Proprietor Killed in Highway Crash
Anaconda man Hum a 42 year old New China Cafe proprietor died in a two car collision on the Anaconda-Butte highway near the pipeline overhead. Robert W. Lundy and Tom Wing Fay were hospitalized with injuries. Gardipee a passenger in Lundy is treated for head and leg injuries. Hum was born in Canton and came to Anaconda in 1956 to open the cafe.

Lee Williams Dead Deer Lodge Banker Dies at 79
Deer Lodge banker and businessman Lee Williams died Sunday in a local hospital after a brief illness. He was president of the Deer Lodge Bank and Trust Co and led Williams and Taverner Ranch Co. He also headed Deer Lodge Insurance Co and Rock Creek Lake Irrigation Co and served as past president of the Montana County Commissioners Association. Born September 25, 1881 near Livingston Iowa, he moved to Deer Lodge in 1882 with his parents. He studied at Montana State Agricultural College and Cornell University before working as a contract surveyor for the state.
