Washington—the 84th Congress forwarded hundreds of bills on Saturday but failed to adjourn as planned. Monday’s meeting looms to wrap up public housing and funding for the legislative branch amid a war emergency. The House and Senate recessed with adjournment still open.
The VA and FHA announced tighter mortgage terms effective immediately limiting repayment to 25 years and raising minimum down payments. FHA requires 7 percent down on first 9,000 and 27 percent on the balance, changing past 5 and 25 percent. For GI loans the no down payment average purchase near 10,500 will now need about 210 down. Analysts warn higher monthly payments will follow, about 49 cents per 1,000 borrowed. Senate and House leaders split on the move.
Visitors fill Dillon for the Lewis and Clark sesquicentennial pageant along Beaverhead River. The six episode event, written by Graves and Forrester, directed by Joe Ryburn, features Shoshone prayers, Sacajawea scenes, and a pipe of peace. Lt Gov Gosman will give a welcome. Sponsored by the Dillon Junior Chamber of Commerce.
DEER LODGE nearly 600 delegates at the state Moose convention named Miles City as the 1956 site and elected Harley Morris of Missoula as president, succeeding Dillard Cates of Harlowton. Other officers were named as Leland Smith of Billings vice president and Arthur C. Wilson of Helena secretary treasurer, with appointive posts announced. The event included drill team contests and leaders Earl W. Horton and Kay Cancie of Mooseheart, Ill.
James T. Finlen western general counsel for The Anaconda Company and C. J. Burns vice president of Montana Power Co. are Butte men named to the Natural Resources Committee of the Chamber of Commerce of the United States. The 41 members meet in St Louis on January 23 1956 with Frank E. McCaslin of Portland as chairman.
Peiping Premier Chou En-lai said in a speech that Red China wants no war with the United States and the release of U S civilians held behind the bamboo curtain can be settled in Geneva talks starting Monday. He indicated quick progress on releasing 40 U S civilians but did not address 11 U S fliers jailed on espionage charges as Washington noted the speech may simply set terms before talks. Frederick F. Frick, longtime chief of Anaconda Copper’s Research Department, will retire August 1 after four decades of developing world scale processes. He will be succeeded by Francis L. Holderreed, with Robert E. Sullivan stepping in as Frick’s replacement in the research line.
Mayor Tim J. Sullivan urged consolidating city and county governments to cut duplication and waste. He favored disincorporating Butte via state law, creating a county commission form and equalized tax levy to save an estimated 350000 to 400000 yearly. The city would remain Improvement District No 1 to fund police fire and pensions.

A seven year old girl, Cheryl Lucille Buchmann, was struck and killed by an auto while crossing Montana Highway 35 near her Polson home. The driver was Frank J. Effie of Rochester New York. The inquest was scheduled for Wednesday night and funeral services were planned for Tuesday. It marked the state's 107th highway fatality.
The House approved 194 to 44 a bill extending the Sugar Act to December 31 1960 and revising quotas. It removes a 90 percent price supports provision and shifts future shares among domestic and foreign producers including Mexico Dominican Republic Peru Panama Haiti and others. Growth-based increases will raise domestic consumption from 1956 with foreign quotas rising from 1957. The Philippine quota remains at 977000 tons with no added benefits.
Washington awaited President Eisenhower decision as Senator group approved Dudley Sharp for assistant secretary, pledging to avoid conflicts with private business. Talbott resisted calls to quit amid probe into earnings from his partnership with Paul B Mulligan & Co. and possible ethics questions.
MISSOULA Mont. Saturday night a bag with 725 dollars was found in the trunk of an abandoned car in West Riverside by Mrs. Bernard Nantt. Sheriff and police believe the money came from the Farmers State Bank of Victor robbery Thursday by four masked youths. The cash included 500 in five dollar bills 200 in two dollar bills and 25 in pennies. Investigators continue to search for the four suspects.
Helena Montana Gov J Hugo Aronson announced the Montana Board of Health adopted a voluntary polio vaccine distribution plan following a special advisory committee that includes the Montana Medical Assn Montana PTA and Montana Pharmaceutical Assn The program, developed to align with a national plan and President Eisenhower and the U S Public Health Service request, will coordinate with the President's national committee to distribute the vaccine through public programs and private channels as available
Ambassador A. Alexis Johnson, the State Department trouble shooter, flies to Geneva to test Chou En-lai's offer to negotiate on release of American prisoners. He will meet Wang Ping Nan in Geneva for the first ambassador level talks since the Geneva Far East conference. Johnson aims to secure the release of Americans detained in China and departs Idlewild for Paris and Geneva.
Vernon Detrick of Polson Montana and radar observer John Williams of Midlothian Virginia bailed from a burning F94 Starfire jet during a routine Moody Air Force Base training flight. Detrick suffered lacera tions and a sprained ankle after parachuting into a tree. Williams landed uninjured near a highway. Aircraft location was not determined and may have crashed into nearby lakes. Both men belong to the 3551st Training Squadron at the All Weather Flying School.

The House passed about 240 measures in hours, affecting individuals and regions, with final passage of the minimum wage bill awaiting signature to raise pay for roughly 2.1 million interstate workers earning under one dollar an hour.
