Prohibition Director Amos W. Woodcock announced a policy of steady pressure against major commercial violators of the dry laws. He criticized chasing minor non commercial cases and vowed to focus enforcement on commercial operations. The statement was issued in Washington on July 30.
A large crowd honors Dr. T J Murray on Murray Day as he marks 75 years of life and 45 years in Butte. Delegations from the Butte Chamber of Commerce and the Butte Rotary Club present tokens, with speeches by Paul A Huddoff and Senator Harry A Gallwey. The honored physician, noted for decades of service, responds gratefully and remains in improving health at his Washington and Granite home.
Chicago July 30 A patrolman identified Frankie Foster a dapper gangster as the man who fled after the murder of Alfred J. Lingle Chicago Tribune reporter. Foster arrested in Los Angeles was returned for questioning and was said to have owned the gun used in the subway slaying though police said they believed he had no actual connection.
At a bail hearing for Foster the courtroom heard Patrolman Ruthy identify Foster as the man he chased after hearing a revolver shot near the Lingle murder scene. Judge Trude had delayed the case to September 9 while prosecutors weigh an earlier reset. A separate grand jury probing the Lingle murder heard final witnesses Roche and Rathburne discuss general progress. Roche deflected questions about what he told jurors.
A 25 man crew led by John B. Taylor and Forest Ranger Cole rushed to the Dempsey creek head to protect an irrigation flume serving Powell county ranches as a 15 man team fought a Mount Powell blaze. Lightning is blamed for the fire discovered Tuesday by Montana Power inspectors near Morell Milwaukee station. Over 10 acres of timber burned threatening water supply.
