Fires explode as Helena Canyon Ferry blaze grows
Two central eastern Montana fires burn about 2300 acres of grass and timber north of Win nett and near Canyon Ferry Reservoir. Two Small Fires Contained Near Whitehall and Crooked Creek
A lightning sparked fire in the Tobacco Root Mountains south of Whitehall burned about half an acre of sagebrush before two Whitehall Ranger Station crew members contained it. A second campfire caused grass and pine needle fire near Fish Creek was stopped by another two-man Whitehall crew. Winds reached 25 mph as crews and local picnickers helped. Four bulldozers, three pumper trucks and retardant drops were used on the Crooked Creek blaze west of the Musselshell River, but containment failed. Dozens of firefighters from Hays and BLM worked with high winds forecast. Total area burned on Monday was 100 acres.

Indian youth dies after fall from gas tank near Poplar
Marvin Spotted Bear, 16, of Brockton died in a Poplar hospital from injuries after he fell 20 feet from a Farmers Union Elevator Co. gasoline storage tank Friday night. A Fort Peck tribal officer said he and two or three youths may have sniffed gasoline fumes before the fall. Spotted Bear was found unconscious by tribal police and moved to Poplar hospital.
