Fire destroyed the Chesapeake Bay steamer City of Baltimore off Maryland, with about 100 aboard. Rescue services from the U S Naval Academy and daybreak air search pressed to find survivors as the death toll possibly nears fifty.
The Anaconda company sent Montana state treasurer a 220716.28 payment for the first half of 1937 under the new unemployment compensation law. The 1.8 percent tax implies a six month Montana payroll of 12262016.59 and an annual payroll near 25000000 for the company alone. Subsidiaries pay about 16000 more, with the tax rising to 2.7 percent next year. This is in addition to federal social security and other state and federal taxes.
About 5,000 Chinese gen darmes attacked the Japanese garrison at Tungchow, 20 miles east of Peiping, trapping hundreds as oil tanks and buildings burned. Japanese tanks and 300 soldiers sped from the northeast toward Fengtai amid heavy gunfire and smoke.
Passengers including John H. Bing of Latimore and fellow travelers were rescued from the burning City of Baltimore after the fire broke out while en route to Langley Field. Bing and two others had just enlisted in the coast guard and been sent to Langley.
Two prominent critics threaten the New Deal with attacks on the National Labor Relations Board. Senator Nye charges bias and calls for abolition to stop economic harm. Representative Rankin accuses the board of conspiring with communistic influences to damage Southern industries.
Washington July 29 The Roosevelt administration faces a possible second defeat as AFL lobbyists seek to shelve the wage and hour bill. John P Frey head of the AFL metal trades dept says delay until next year is wanted while opposing board powers and warning of Walsh Healey act impact. Senator Wheeler notes weakening labor support for the measure in Congress.
Montana elevators and mills held about 750000 bushels of wheat on July 1, well below the 1100000 bushels stored a year earlier, according to Jay G. Diamond, federal state agricultural statistician. The report notes the July 1 total and signals a sizable year over year decline.
Mrs. Elizabeth Lochrie told the Butte Rotary club that 200 Montanans earn a living as artists and 40 are qualified for federal contracts. Off Saint Jean de Luz a submarine attacked three Spanish tankers and a French steamer was seized by a rebel cruiser Canarias. British and French warships massed near Spanish waters to guard freighters flying loyalist flags and avoid blockade breaches near Santander and Gijon.

Police report July traffic fine revenue near 500 dollars with 430 fines paid at 1 dollar each for violations like over parking and double parking. Desk Sergeant George Needy notes April's previous record of 330 fines. Officers intensified enforcement as 178 tickets were issued Tuesday night and promise ongoing crackdowns.
