Narcotic rings disrupted as 20 arrested nationwide

Treasury narcotics division agents raided three cities over the weekend arresting leaders of five smuggling gangs. They seized morphine and heroin and disrupted operations moving drugs from Turkey into the United States with a multi million dollar impact. Harry J. Anslinger announced the raids covering the Atlantic coast and ending last night.

Frank Reid of Twin Bridges Dies Suddenly at Ranch Home

Frank Reid, 40-year resident and president of the First National Bank of Twin Bridges, died this morning at his ranch near town after a brief conversation with his wife. He was a longtime pioneer and prominent figure in Madison County’s development.

Soucek Survives After Chute Tangled in Crash Over Camp Kearney

Lieutenant Apollo Soucek narrowly escaped death when a collision 3,000 feet up over Camp Kearney, San Diego, left his plane wrecked and his parachute tangled. He freed the chute at about 200 feet, breaking part of his fall and sustaining a sprained back and bruises. The other pilot landed safely.

R 100 Airship Advancing Toward Montreal Route

The dirigible R-100 leading the England Canada airship route reported its position over the ocean early today. In British daylight time it logged 53.05 N 21:00 W about 500 miles west northwest of Cape Clear Ireland and 1 275 miles east northeast of St Johns Newfoundland.

National Legion Leader to Visit Butte Over Weekend

O L Bodenhamer national commander of the American Legion will guest with Butte Legionnaires Saturday and Sunday. Colonel D G Stilvers, post entertainment chair, and Silver Bow officers plan to meet him in Helena Thursday. The commander will likely join the delegation to Bozeman for the state convention opening Monday.

Rotana Club Hosts Girl Scouts Picnic at Camp

The Rotana club hosted its annual picnic for 91 members and guests at the Little Basin creek scout camp. Girl Scouts staged two Robin Hood acts with twig stage and candles as footlights, sang, and read. Miss Katherine Murphy praised the Scouts. Margery Bedinger welcomed as a new Rotana member.

Fire escape contracts awarded by school board

Trustees of school district No 1 awarded three contracts last night. Potter Manufacturing of Chicago won the bid to equip Butte high school with fire escapes at 4700 dollars for three units, including connections and repairs. Sullivan Valve and Engineering Co. won the Webster school stoker installation bid for 1015 dollars. The coal bid was referred to a committee for further consideration.

Heat Wave Ravages Arkansas Crops and Forests

A severe heat wave in Arkansas and surrounding states sparked forest fires and extensive crop damage. Gov land near Mena and timber near Norman were burned as 125 firefighters fought on. Temperatures reached 106 to 114 degrees with relief expected tomorrow.
