GREAT FALLS Mont A five million dollar joint contract for construction of the Montana Power Co Cochrane hydroelectric plant north of Great Falls was awarded to Winston Bros of Monrovia California and Green Construction Co of Des Moines Iowa The project near Great Falls on the Missouri River eight miles northeast will cost about 15 million dollars to complete the dam and powerhouse Completion would boost the area generating capacity to serve five cities the size of Great Falls Bechtel Corp handled engineering work and more contracts will be issued as work progresses
London moves to freeze all assets of the Suez Canal Co and Egyptian cash in the United Kingdom. Britain forms a three power conference with the United States and France to discuss further steps. Egypt vows to challenge the action at The Hague and warns banks to comply or face repercussions.
Four Polish air cadets fled behind the Iron Curtain taking two stolen training planes. They landed in Austria after a 400 mile night flight seeking political asylum from unbearable living conditions in Poland. They said Polish airport guards opened fire but none hit. The foursome departed from Deblin near Warsaw aiming for Munich but ran low on fuel due to bad weather.
A Forest Service insect control school for planning 1957 aerial spraying against spruce budworm in Beaverhead and Deer Lodge National Forests opens Wednesday in Ennis. Attendees include biologists and entomologists led by Harvey Rowland of the Deer Lodge office in Butte. The two day program covers field work and administrative classes to standardize sampling methods and outline the infestation periphery.
A four year old Indian boy named David Hart, son of Mr and Mrs Frank Hart of Ashland, drowned Saturday while swimming with nine companions near his home. Father Emmett Hoffman of St Labre Mission said efforts to revive him with artificial respiration and oxygen failed.
A special committee in School District No. 1, Butte, is studying how to house up to 6,000 more school children in five years. The extensive survey, led by George Haney and unpaid members, will assess safety, sanitation, site adequacy, and future site plans, with recommendations for additions and alterations.
Early returns from Texas primary show Price Daniel leading for the Democratic nomination for governor with 47,528 votes to Yarborough 34,140 and O'Daniel 29,527 from 8 of 254 counties. Haley and Senterfitt also trail, while three segregation and states rights referenda dominate the ballot.

In Montana, two more fatalities boosted the state total to 145 for the year. Roy M. Aamodt Jr. died in a Livingston crash near Gardiner. his father was seriously injured. Earlier, 21-year-old Edward Miller died at the same site. In Great Falls, Airman Richard Dragoon, 21, was killed when a car left River Road. Airman Richard Roy, 20, was slightly injured. At Billings, five people were seriously hurt in a near head-on collision at the US 87 and 10 junction involving five passengers including La Follette, Boyd, Clark, Schmell, and Edward Armstrong.
A seven man five woman jury could not agree on a verdict in the Alley Oop club assault case of Dr. Earl G. Broderick 38 year old Helena physician. Judge Victor H. Fall dismissed the panel and set the trial for October term. Prosecutor John C. Harrison said he will refile the case. Broderick formerly chief surgeon at the Veterans Administration hospital Ft Harrison is charged with first degree assault of William Bose 30 a plas terer. The incident reportedly occurred April 27 on Priest Pass southwest of Helena. Defense contends Bose struck first and Broderick acted in self defense.
Mrs. Mildred G. Hennelly of Butte said she asked the New York Red Cross for news on her mother Amanda Hedin and sister Mildred Hennelly, passengers aboard the Stockholm, which collided with the Andrea Doria in the Atlantic. Montanans aboard included Elsa Westin of Anaconda and Hilda Wagner of Missoula.
Raul Escobar a three year old boy in Mexico City died after a small electric iron among toys started a bed fire when he connected it. The flames burned him before discovery. His mother had put him to bed with the toys.
A Wall Street petition urges Gen. Douglas MacArthur to run as the Republican candidate for United States senator from New York. It calls for support from party leaders and voters to back his nomination in the upcoming race.
Albert Woolson 109 year old veteran and last Civil War Union Army survivor lay in a Duluth hospital in very poor condition on Saturday. Doctors said he showed no response to life-preserving stimuli as his three daughters watched at his bedside.
The United States sharply rebuked Egyptian President Nasser for intemperate, inaccurate and misleading statements about U S policy. The protest, delivered orally by Undersecretary Hoover Jr to Ambassador Ahmed Husein, followed rapid Suez crisis developments including Murphy’s London mission and Dulles’ expedited return to Washington to coordinate policy with Britain and France. The U S affirmed support for allied actions to keep the canal open and discussed measures with British and French ministers.
