A fire reported in the Silver Lake district was brought under control promptly. Local fire units responded to the blaze as residents were advised to stay clear of the affected area. No injuries were reported, and investigations into the cause were launched by authorities.
Fire crews from three states fought a 35,000 acre blaze in the Nelson basin above Barker Creek. Ranger W F Simons led Deer Lodge National Forest efforts to pin it to seven acres at 9000 feet elevation. The fire, near the Silver Lake district, was curbed by last night with reports of excellent forest fire conditions overall in the area.
In Harlem, a black sedan sprayed machine gun bullets at a man on East 107th street injuring five children playing nearby. Police say the attack likely stemmed from Italian Irish clashes over the Harlem beer trade. the occupants fled and no victims were struck fatally. Several children were in critical or serious condition, others sent home after hospital treatment. Witnesses reported the car sped away and bystanders fled in panic as gunfire erupted.
London July 28 Henry L Stimson, returning from Berlin, said Germany will weather the economic crisis if it re establishes confidence and resumes work. He found no signs of revolution, noting no hostile demonstrations during talks with Bruening and Curtius. He added Germany cannot obtain needed credits until it helps itself.
Frequent sightings of planes streaking from Newfoundland's southern tip toward the Atlantic heighten belief that four Europe bound airmen are at sea tonight. Last sighting was Bay Roberts near Cape Race with other craft west near Trespassey Ramea and Cape St Marys. In 12 years a dozen planes crossed eastward. today two started together bound for Turkey and around the world after prior failed lifts. Neither craft yet identified amid high speed.
The joint meeting of the county commissioners and district school board approved a $214 925 27 budget for 1931 32, the lowest in the operation of Butte High School. Insurance and other nonessential items raised the total by over $8 000, while payrolls and claims were approved.

Miss Margaret Villeneuve, 29, an invalid, died when the home of her parents near Anaconda burned. Firemen found the house a seething furnace as relatives tried to reach her. The mother and father were injured while attempting rescues. The family lived 11 miles from Anaconda on the upper Race Track road.
United States appeals court reversed five Indianapolis policemen convictions for conspiracy to violate Prohibition after dry agents used a decoy to run a speakeasy. Judges said the trapping methods shocked the court and urged the government not to use condemned means.
The Montana School of Mines will add three new staff members to its faculty. Paul A. Schafer becomes assistant professor of geology to assist Professor Perry with groundwater studies, bringing experience from Harvard and Wisconsin, with prior teaching at Hamilton College. J. A. MacEwan is named instructor of metallurgy, a Queen’s University graduate and former smelter superintendent for Kingston Mining, Smelting and Manufacturing Company. The third hire fills the resignation of Acting Professor Frederick Gilbert. MacEwan has worked for Kingston since 1922 and previously for Anaconda Lead Products and Holinger mine assays.
July 28 four Ray Edwards of Ennis died at Fort Harrison Veterans Hospital after being transported by air following a wreck that broke his back.
Exiled King Alfonso of Spain met his third son Don Juan in London on July 28, but officials denied reports that the former monarch abdicated his claims to the throne in favor of the 18 year old youth.
Col and Mrs Charles A Lindbergh were forced to return to Glenn Curtiss airport New York from Washington because their radio equipment malfunctioned. They planned a Maine vacation flight but rain and tech issues caused a one day postponement with the Lockheed Sirius awaiting repair before a possible departure to North Haven.
