Sixty six written protests were received Monday against Metro Sewer District assessments proposed in a resolution due for final adoption by the Board of County Commissioners who also serve as the district board. The assessment will take care.
In a special session the City Council directed City Atty. W N Geagan to file a written protest to the Board of County Commissioners about a proposed assessment on city owned property to fund the Metro Sewer District phase one. The protest seeks detailed cost per square foot, allocation plans, and any past service charges, plus a possible federal funding commitment.
The Senate approved by voice vote a $7.5 billion omnibus housing bill sending it to the House. It funds major housing programs for four years and adds a new rent subsidy plan aimed at creating about 375,000 apartment units for low income families.
Governors bicker over Viet Nam policy as Democrats engineered its abolition to dodge a floor fight revealing party rift. Connally reports Dems favor keeping the committee defunct with no civil rights resolution. Connally and Smylie win re election as chairmen, both support the President’s actions in the Dominican Republic and Viet Nam.
President Johnson will meet Democratic and Republican congressional leaders Tuesday or Wednesday to discuss stepped up U.S. involvement in Vietnam. Moyers said Johnson will outline subjects for final decisions as he nears a policy choice amid ongoing Viet Nam strategy sessions.
A 13 year old, Ernest Cerise, who recently graduated Holy Savior School, drowned in Bison Creek near his Elk Park home while wading in shallow water. His sister Mary, 12, cried for help as two swimming boys rescued her. authorities reported he stepped off a ledge into a hole and could not swim.
Eastern Montana’s highway funds are financing western Interstate construction, said Dallas Van Delinder of Billings. He challenged the Interstate allocation and warned the district law fairness is being undermined by western overdrawn districts and eastern cash flow. He cited a 91.3 to 8.7 percent federal to state matching ratio and possible $9.5 to $10 million in roads. Delinder blamed delays on railroad location and routes in Billings, while engineers argued project timing and disputes stretched eastward work.
The House narrowly limits debate on a repeal of Taft-Hartley section 14B. Democratic leaders and labor supporters push for quick passage with 248 voting to restrict debate and 236 Democrats and 12 Republicans in the majority. Republicans decry a gag rule as Powell defends proceeding.
Postmaster A H Wilkinson announced that post office windows will close on Saturdays starting July 31. The main post office on Harrison Avenue and Station A at 49 W Park will close, but carrier delivery remains unchanged with routes and regular Saturday deliveries. A survey found window business at both locations slack to an exceptionally quiet level on Saturdays.
Residents near the 2800 block of Wharton were startled by a parked apparently abandoned station wagon with a motionless figure. Deputies Thom as and Little found a man sleeping inside and ordered him to move on. The scene recalls the McQuiston murders case last April and ongoing reports of abandoned vehicles.

In Saigon South Viet Nam the main north south artery is blocked by protruding railroad ties and twisted rails buried in the highway. The seven mile barrier disrupts traffic and cripples the nearby north south railway. Obstacles also line major and minor roads to the east west north and south. Continued on Page 2 Col 4.
Louisiana bankers farmers and soil conservationists heard Montana’s 17 million acre feet of Missouri River water flows yearly to downstream uses. Dick Setterstrom of Montana Power Co. urged redirecting more of that water to beneficial use in Montana.
