Montana golf group elects Wallace Smith president at annual meeting

Wallace K. Smith of Anaconda was elected president of the Montana State Golf Association at the annual meeting in Butte. The Anaconda Country Club won the 1941 state tournament and Henry Good of Kalispell was named vice president. Joe Dunleavy of Butte was chosen secretary, with a long list of directors named for the coming year.

Miles City July 26 Growers urge the right to plant more beets arguing the domestic market should favor American farmers. Preliminary county budget adopted by commissioners

Silver Bow county commissioners approved a preliminary operating budget of 734 937.87 for 1940 41, an increase of 9 240 57 from 1939 40. The plan excludes special assessments and certain district expenditures such as garbage and fire funds and is open to public inspection. A final budget hearing with levy decisions is scheduled for Monday August 12 at 10 am, when taxpayers may speak.

French Ships Manned to Fight Nazis in British Waters

London reports Britain and Free French forces manning a powerful squadron of French warships to counter Nazi torpedo boats and bomber swarms in British waters. Admiralty notes several ships of varying sizes are at sea, crewed by Free French and British sailors, with at least one vessel already showing success. The move follows a major Nazi attack that crippled part of a 21 ship convoy in the English Channel.

Crippled Kiddie Picnic Planned Rain or Shine

Miss Louise Schrupp announced the annual crippled children’s picnic by the Butte Rehabilitation auxiliary to be held today rain or shine. If weather allows, children and mothers will visit Basin Creek reservoir. otherwise the event relocates to a standby site, with departures from St James hospital at 7 45 this morning and return by 4 30. About 75 invited Butte youngsters are expected.

League of Nations to Move Economic Unit to Princeton

Heat Wave Sweeps Eastern States Setting Summer Records

Temperatures rose across the eastern U S hitting new seasonal highs with New York up to 94 3 F in some spots and six hour gains of up to 22 degrees in eastern Pennsylvania. Virginia saw 97 to 99 F with Norfolk noting its hottest July 26 since 1875 while Newport News Shipyard suspended all but emergency work amid the heat.

J Bruce Kremer Services Held in Washington DC

Funeral services for J Bruce Kremer a former Montana Democratic national committeeman and attorney were conducted at his Washington DC home with 300 plus leaders attending. Monsignor Michael J Ready presided at Catholic rites. Burial followed at Rock Creek cemetery. Over 200 floral tributes filled the residence and pre service music featured range songs per Kremer's wishes.
