Hundreds of costumed citizens flood streets as a two day sales event returns with retailers opening early and offering steep prices. Prizes for zaniest outfits at 9 15 a m in East Park Street parking lot. Stores 10 a m Friday 9 15 to 5 30 Saturday. Public invited to join the spectacle and bargain hunting.
Fourteen members of the Butte City Council reviewed a preliminary budget Thursday night showing a deficit of 66 397 29. Total revenue is listed at 4 318 137 47 with expenditures at 4 384 534 76 and last year’s budget 4 164 228 27. A protest hearing is set for Aug 7 at 7 30 p m in council chambers to address the unbalanced funds and proposed revenue-raising or cuts.
Helena Montana officials announce a Wednesday 9 a.m. meeting at the Helena Civic Center on city budget problems. Mayor Thomas Power says the session will include the attorney general and state examiner staffs and target unbalanced preliminary budgets affecting police and fire protection.
Butte Mayor Thomas F Powers leads a delegation to Helena to challenge the Highway Commissions encroachment policy adopted last October and reaffirmed this year The policy governs advertising signs that overhang rights of way on urban routes and federal aid highways Officials note remaining encroachments in Buttes business loop and say sign removal must occur before projects proceed
The state prosecutor in Frankfurt demanded a life sentence for Fritz von Hahn on charges of aiding and abetting the murder of at least 31,343 Greek Jews. He allegedly cooperated with Adolf Eichmann, who was tried and executed in Israel in 1962. The verdict is set for next month.
Montana Prison Warden E C Filsworth said the armed man believed in hiding in the mountains is not one of our ex inmates. Two prison escapees were arrested in Salt Lake City. One escapee believed to be the vanished man held Alma Robuck hostage for hours. Harold Bates 26 of Billings remains missing on the West Coast. Prison officials cite over 300 man days spent on the search with Powell County Posse involvement.
Salt Lake City police captured Jerry Desmond and William Kelly, escapees from Montana State Prison, when they came to collect a money order. Warden E C Ellsworth Jr said Bates remains at large. Authorities traced the telegram money transfer from Kelly’s relative to the arrest.
Prague reports the Czechoslovak Communist presidium dismissed Lt Gen Vaclav Prohlik from a high post after his broadcast demanding changes in the Warsaw Pact. The party dissolved its State Administration Department, citing overlap with government bodies, while Prohlik remains part of the military in a reassigning move. The action follows a Soviet note accusing him of disclosing secrets and aims to mollify Moscow ahead of a planned East Bloc meeting.
Lagos Nigeria AP reports a federal spokesman called the Niamey dispatch ridiculous as Nigerien and Biafran delegates reportedly agreed on a mercy corridor across northern Biafra to feed refugees. The corridor would run from Enugu to Ogoja about 93 miles east but officials doubt its practicality.
Dillon bar owner Steve Logan aged 61 was charged with first degree murder in the case of Henry Hoerster aged 23 who was fatally shot at Moose Bar after a coroner's jury found the shooting unwarranted following a dispute over a dime. Six witnesses testified at the inquest as Police Chief Leo Williams produced the 38 caliber pistol used in the shooting.
Four witnesses recount a barroom quarrel over a dime at closing time when Hoerster allegedly pulled a knife and Logan fired after Indy Hoerster leaped over the bar. The dispute followed Logan being warned not to get smart and then firing toward Hoerster.

Henry Anderson of Sidney became first vice president and Cal Westermark of Shelby was chosen second vice president. Ray Kelly of Polson was re elected secretary treasurer with about 600 attendees including Grand Exalted Ruler Edward W. McCabe of Knoxville. Installation of officers and 1969 convention site selection set for Saturday.
Senator Edward M Kennedy of Massachusetts drafts a plain statement withdrawing from consideration for the 1968 Democratic vice presidential nomination. He cites no run for VP while Humphrey is seen as certain to secure the presidential nomination and contemplates McCarthy or Sargent Shriver as a possible running mate.
E Lowery Kunkel announces a 12 county Inter-County Development Corp plan to build a multi million dollar resort at Gregson Hot Springs. The project includes a 100 plus room hotel, dining, golf, large pools, camping, ski access, convention facilities, and year round recreation to boost local jobs.
A three year old girl, Sandra Harwood, is in critical condition after a bullet wound to the head suffered while playing with a 22 caliber revolver at home. Her 6 year old brother reportedly fired the weapon. a 12 year old neighbor was watching. The child was initially treated at a local hospital and flown to Great Falls.
Colorful rides and races roll across Montana with events from Bozeman to Great Falls. The Bozeman Trail Gun Meet, Central Montana Fair, All-Arabian Horse Show and Montana State Horse Show run through the weekend in venues from Lewistown to Columbus.
