Butte City Council approved a preliminary 1966 67 budget of 2 155 046 14 with a 52.44 mill levy unchanged from last year. An across the board $20 monthly pay hike applies to most city employees while state law maxima may limit some raises.
Congress took over efforts to halt the 18 day strike against five major airlines as the Labor Department reported a stalemate and the White House stayed silent. Senator Morse proposed a back to work bill while a mediation panel seeks a settlement. A public hearing is planned for Tuesday as talks stall.
Butte School District No. 1 faces a $4,693,456.66 operating cost for the 1966 67 year covering public elementary schools and Butte High. County commissioners adopted the budgets Monday, about $32,000 above trustees’ preliminary figures. Taxable valuation climbs to $44.33 million from $32.91 million, prompting a higher overall program.
All off duty Billings firefighters were recalled to fight a downtown blaze at the Alexandria Hotel on First Avenue North and 31st Street. The fire began shortly before 9 p m and remained out of control at the latest report. The cause was not yet determined.
Reports from Saigon describe a brutal massacre of wounded U S Marines after their company was trapped in a jungle ambush near the North Vietnamese border. Survivors say attackers moved through the wounded, shooting those who stirred, amid a firefight that left around 19 men alive from a 40-man platoon.
President Johnson has word through diplomatic channels that there are no immediate plans to try captured American airmen as war criminals. Moyers said the information is consistent with CBS and Ho Chi Minh reply. officials cautioned about interpretation. CTK quoted leniency hints from Hanoi toward captives.
Weekend storms sparked two fires in the Deerlodge National Forest. Firefighters from Missoula Airial Fire Depot and Boulder District battled a quarter acre blaze near Buffalo Creek with 1200 gallons of retardant. A second fire, two miles south of Haystack lookout, was under a quarter acre with two jumpers and Butte District crews assisting. In total 35 men, 9 supervisors, 17 Job Corpsmen and 2 directors were dispatched across Beaverhead National Forest.
A forecast for Butte calls for clear to partly cloudy skies with isolated afternoon and evening thundershowers. Temperatures will show little change with a high near 82 and a low around 45. One year ago in Butte the high was 81 and the low 44. Weather chart on Page 2.
Montana highway commissioners warned on Monday they will drop the Permanente Cement Co plan for a direct interchange near Helena if no agreement is reached by August 17. Jefferson County officials favor Boulder-Cardwell road completion in June 1969 and oppose shifting priorities.
A Chicago grand jury deliberated on indicting Richard Speck for the eight nurse killings. State's Atty. Daniel Ward led witnesses in a four hour session and said the proceedings are secret while noting the jury's deliberations. The panel's findings were expected the next day.
Park County attorney Byron Robb said no charges would be filed after a Saturday night stabbing in Livingston. Glen Fogle, 46, of Harrison Arkansas, remained in critical condition after being stabbed twice in the abdomen with a hunting knife. Alberta Bollinger, 23, a coworker at a photography firm, was jailed following the incident. Robb said Fogle allegedly spanked a baby sitting after Bollinger learned of the punishment, and was stabbed as police responded to the call.
Rumors of a water shortage spread as a pump station on the Big Hole River south of Butte failed. A large cast iron wye broke at Divide pump station causing reduced pressure in West Side areas and upper floors. John W. Hazen of Butte Water Co. said repairs would take about two days and residents should refrain from lawn sprinkling until service is restored.
Thirty-one new fires were listed in Region 1 on Monday with only one seen as potentially major. Del Cox lauds a 25 acre Lewis and Clark National Forest blaze with 22 smokejumpers deployed while other fires were reported controlled.
A 200 acre forest fire near Anaconda was brought under control by a 65 man Anaconda Co crew with mop up to continue. Discovered Sunday in Nelson Basin ten miles west of Anaconda, the timber stands on Anaconda Co property. Firefighters from the Anaconda Forest Protective Service joined by smelter surface workers. Smoke seen in Anaconda and Deer Lodge Valley, drifting south of Butte. Fire located about six miles south of the Anaconda Philipsburg road. Cause not reported.
