Governor Frank H. Cooney argues water conservation can save eastern Montana, not evacuation. He cites examples from Golden Gate park and urges reservoirs and flood control dams to reclaim land, while editor J D Scanlan and Congressman Roy Ayers push grazing reservoirs and continued stock industry.
The storm's aftermath brings announced heat deaths of 1,112 and widespread damage across the Gulf region. Texas coastal towns Freeport and Port O Connor suffer heavy flooding, with eleven drowning reports. Livestock losses mount and crops suffer across the Midwest and producing areas. Water shortages emerge in several downstate Illinois counties and Iowa towns haul water in tank cars. Missouri leads states with 312 fatalities followed by Illinois at 300 and Ohio.
The council adjourned after setting the 1934-35 preliminary budget at 679611.15 a two hour recess followed to consider restoring 15 per cent salary cuts for firemen and policemen which were denied. Public objections are due by August 8 with final adoption August 13 and tax levies to be set.
Washington July 25 Dr Elwood Mead reclamation commissioner says the present drought shows the folly of farming in arid regions without a reserve water supply. He notes agriculture has expanded in the semi arid West into areas that should never have been developed. Continued on Page 3 Col 3.

A dynamite blast hurled over the east gate at the Leonard mine endangered watchmen just before midnight Tuesday. One stick exploded. the other failed to ignite. A watchman warned colleagues as flames sizzled, and the group fled for cover. Earlier, a separate dynamiting damaged Mearderville’s copper water flume, quickly repaired by mine men.
Pennsylvania Senator James J. Davis, touring western states by air, praised Montana and Yellowstone scenery as among the world’s finest.
