Blacktail Canyon Fire Near Butte Faces Weather Challenges
Crews monitoring the Blacktail Canyon Fire southeast of Butte warn changing conditions may complicate suppression. Discovered July 19 between I 90 and Highway 2 in Beaverhead Deerlodge NF, the blaze has burned roughly 80 acres with hot dry weather, dead standing lodgepole pines, and steep rocky terrain hindering heavy equipment. Evacuation warnings remain for areas along Blacktail Canyon Road, Homestake Road, and Passmore Canyon as thunderstorms and low humidity threaten spread. 160 personnel and one helicopter are active, with cause still undetermined.

Full fishing closures at Clark Fork tributary mouths
The state Fish and Wildlife Department enacted full fishing closures at the mouths of certain Clark Fork River tributaries effective midnight July 23. Hoot-owl restrictions began July 24 at 2 p.m. on the North Fork Flathead River and parts of the St. Regis River and Rock Creek, prohibiting fishing from 2 p.m. to midnight daily. Closures apply within 100 yards of the Clark Fork confluence with Rattlesnake Creek and the St. Regis confluence, with state warnings about stress to trout from low flows and warm water.
