Saturday Mail Collections Cut For Butte And Deer Lodge

Butte and Deer Lodge post offices announce Saturday mail collections will align with Sunday schedules and window services will be reduced. Federal rules require a payroll cut to the June 1966 level, with deliveries on Saturdays ending after September 1. Deer Lodge will drop Saturday windows while general deliveries to boxes and rural routes remain unchanged.

Two Missoula Residents Die in Separate Montana Crashes

Two people died and five were injured in separate Montana accidents Tuesday night. Gerald Murray 39 of Missoula died when his bus crashed four miles west of Butte on U S 10. Vivian Thompson 45 of Missoula died in a two car crash near Alberton on Interstate 90. Thompson's four children were hospitalized with minor injuries. Clifford Kulppi 29 of Dillon had a broken hip and lacerations. Montana's traffic toll rose to 131, up from 128 a year ago.

House approves weakened gun bill amid revisions

The House passed a 304 to 118 vote to restrict mail order sales of rifles shotguns and ammunition. The measure expands handgun controls but remains weaker than Johnson proposals. nonresidents face limits and dealers must note sales. Age limits: 18 for long guns 21 for handguns.

Former Butte Man Killed in Viet Raid

The son of Mr and Mrs Guy Helsley of Grants New Mexico 20 year old Petty Officer 2c Gregory Phillip Helsley formerly lived in Butte attended Butte High School and was killed in a Da Nang Vietnam raid. He had spent one year in country and hoped for reassignment. Survived by parents a brother and three sisters services planned in Midvale Utah. Helsley body to be at Goff Mortuary in Midvale. Relatives in Butte include an uncle and aunt.

McTavish Named Director of State Nursing Group

Helen M. McTavish named director of the state nurses association succeeding Mrs. Mary D. Munger. The association announces a special economic security project in conjunction with the American Nurses Association and grants Miss McTavish a year’s leave of absence. She is director of education at Silver Bow General Hospital in Butte.

Montana House Rejects Mail Order Gun Ban Vote

The Montana House sent a bill to the Senate Wednesday to restrict mail order gun sales. It passed 158 Democrats and 146 Republicans in favor, with 79 Democrats and 39 Republicans voting against the ban. Representatives Olsen and Battin were named among those voting against.

The Civic Action Committee volunteers assisted local officials in enforcing prostitution and gambling laws. Rev Joseph L Finnegan reported reopenings of alleged houses of prostitution and replacement of punchboards in taverns. He urged action over these flagrant violations seen by teenagers and voters.

Dillon coroner's inquest links death to criminal action

Six man jury rules William Cody's death resulted from criminal action. Richard Jacoby, 58, in Beaverhead jail, to be arraigned for first degree murder next Monday with Frank Davis and Richard Burns as counsel. Jacoby testified Cody threatened him, deprived him of meals, argued with him, and he shot Cody when Cody moved toward a Jeep.

Montanan dies in ranch mishap near Livingston

A transient worker in his late 50s was killed when a hay swather rolled over him on a private road about 25 miles northeast of Livingston. Edward Carter, 50, of the Dillon area, is the identified victim. coroner Dean Lowry sought contact in Big Timber.

Pittsburgh acts after warning of potential trouble

Safety Director David W. Craig said he was warned Tuesday that trouble might arise in Pittsburgh and moved quickly to head it off. He said the warning mirrored one Cleveland officials received before a wave of terror and shooting occurred there Tuesday night.
