In a Sunday release, Defense Secretary McNamara revealed that mining Haiphong might not stop North Vietnamese supplies and could spark larger conflict. The subcommittee deleted his higher risk assessment of a broader war.
Variable cloudiness today with warm temperatures and afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. High near 85, low around 46. One year ago in Butte the readings were 81 and 44. Weather chart on Page 9.
Richard Speck, 24, held at the House of Correction Hospital, is expected to appear before a county grand jury Monday as the state builds its case for the murder of eight student nurses. Doctors report improvement with no fever, resumed meals, and removing stitches as treatment for self inflicted wounds continues. Speck's third arraignment is planned for Thursday in felony court.
U S air forces report 96 bombing missions against North Vietnamese targets on Saturday aiming to destroy dwindling fuel reserves. Three downed airmen were killed and three missing with 12 injured. In the ground war Marines say they killed about 1,246 Communists in ten days of off ensive, while a Viet Cong battalion overran a South Vietnamese company 20 miles away with heavy casualties.
A tornado like wind damaged Casey Lumber Company in East Helena causing about 20000 dollars in ruin. The main warehouse was destroyed and four other structures damaged with gasoline drums toppled. No fires were reported. An eyewitness described it as sounding like dynamite.
Cleveland authorities decide to maintain a strong National Guard presence in the east side riot zone despite two peaceful nights. Mayor Locher says pulling out troops now would be a mistake and decisions will be day to day. Incendiary fires caused minor damage as guard checkpoints kept whites from entering Hough and Murray Hill zones.
Rep Arnold Olsen told about 2000 people at Columbia Gardens in Butte that Montana teachers face larger class sizes longer hours and unnecessary bookkeeping chores. He cited 54.6 million pupils enrolled in fall 1965 and condemned the poverty program focus on special education.
The six member states of the Common Market agreed on unified farm prices and marketing rules affecting about 10 million farmers and 180 million consumers. Walter Hallstein said the pact is the most important in European community history as it resets tariff talks with the United States and sets the stage for Kennedy round offers in Geneva. France warned prices may be too high while noting essential policy points are defined. two years of negotiation led to last year’s French walkout and seven months of boycott.
Alberta Bollinger, 23, was jailed for investigation of stabbing Glen Foley, about 35, in Livingston. Foley, who spanked Bollinger’s 2-year-old son at a babysitter’s home, was stabbed twice in the abdomen and remained in critical condition at a Livingston hospital. The incident occurred between 9 and 10 p.m. Saturday as Foley allegedly punished the child. Bollinger reportedly returned home and police were summoned.
A public hearing starts at 10 a.m. in the courthouse office of Maybelle Hogan to review the 1966 67 budgets for Butte High School and elementary schools. The board of county commissioners acts as the school budget supervisors and taxpayers may attend to voice views.
More than 300 Serbian Church members and friends gathered at the Finlen Hotel for the first anniversary banquet marking the consecration of the Holy Trinity Serbian Church. Speeches praised the congregation, its debt reduction, and Bishop Gregory's leadership. Other speakers included Rep. Arnold Olsen and Gov. Tim Babcock.
