Montana Supreme Court blocks gambling ballot measure
Montana's Supreme Court issued an injunction preventing the public vote on initiative No 63. The justices ruled the proposed measure could not amend the constitution by initiative and would enact unconstitutional law. The ruling directed Secretary of State Frank Murray to halt placement on the November ballot. Chief Justice Castles and four associates signed the order.

Two Stabbings in Separate Butte Brawls
Two men were stabbed in separate Friday night incidents in Butte. Harland J. Yow, 42, of 743 North Main, was gravely injured with a throat gash from a mine fuse knife at the Lost Week Inn. Robert Moore, 37, of 301 North Main, sustained a severe laceration over an eye in the same melee. Deputies later arrested Harrison Lee Barnett, 22, of Walkerville after Donald Jacobs, 923 Prospect, said Barnett stabbed him three times during a struggle.
