The day shift shutdown idles 3600 workers in Butte and Anaconda as mining operations halt on Butte Hill. E I Renouard of Anaconda Co says no fix time and cites labor-group actions. If unresolved, about 6500 workers could lose work in Butte Anaconda and Great Falls.
Secretary of State Dean Rusk told Andrei Gromyko in Geneva that Moscow cannot erase Western rights in Berlin by signing an East German peace treaty. A UPI report notes Gromyko rejected Western concessions and signaled continued push for new nuclear weapons tests at the 17 nation disarmament conference.
Eastern Air Lines spurned Labor Secretary Arthur Goldberg's truce plan and gave flight engineers till midnight to return to work or lose job rights on jet planes. President Malcolm A. Macintyre said the company would not reconsider any government formula to end the 32 day walkout. In New York, engineers sought a federal court order against rehiring individuals but Judge Dudley B. Bonsal denied the appeal.
The forecast calls for fair butte today through Thursday with afternoon and evening cloudiness and occasional thunder storms. Highs around 84 today, lows near 48 tonight. Northeast areas see cooler conditions Wednesday with highs 80 to 90 and lows 45 to 60, while west areas expect partly cloudy skies and scattered thundershowers. The table notes maximums refer to 12 hours and minimums to 18 hours ending 5 p.m. MST Tuesday.
A 4-year-old Billings girl Sally Wright died after a car struck her at 5 15 p m Tuesday in a west Billings area. Driver Ervin Schweiger 36 rushed Sally and her parents to the hospital where she died en route. It is the 116th highway death in Montana this year, down from 158 a year ago.
President Kennedy prepared to push Congress for a 900 million public works program to stimulate the economy. House administration leaders plan action next week with hearings by the Rules Committee and Ways & Means on July economic data and possible tax cuts. Senate Finance Chairman Byrd aims to trim the tax revision bill to include a 1.1 billion tax incentive for business.
Montana's unemployment fund stood only 727,935 above the 20 million floor as worries spread that the Butte Hill event could push the fund below the floor. Officials said measurable effects would take about a week to appear with possible tax hikes from 1.5 to 2 percent, to 2.7 percent if not restored within a year.
Mine-Mill Union and Anaconda Co. resumed bargaining today as a strike tense atmosphere grows in Butte. Negotiators for the union representing Butte miners and for the company and its smelter workers in Anaconda Great Falls and East Helena met for an hour Tuesday and recessed until 11 o'clock Wednesday. Both sides have bargained since June 6 with contract expired June 30 and daily operations continued under a day to day arrangement amid ongoing talk and frequent recesses.
Three defendants Kenneth Miller Charles Johnson and James Cerise faced charges of malicious destruction of city property parking meters in police court Tuesday Judge John Seton accepted guilty pleas and fined each $300 plus 90 days in city jail with a 90 day stay of execution and potential suspension based on behavior.
The crafts unions of the metal trades meeting in Butte defer further action in the labor-manage ment dispute with Anaconda Co. A subcommittee announced that a duly authorized committee will issue another statement later. Thomas J. Walsh of Anaconda chaired the Tuesday night session.
Butte Teamsters Local No. 2 say they are available at all times and willing to discuss terms for next year following Anaconda Co operations on Butte Hill being closed amid picketing of the Butte, Anaconda and Pacific Railroad. Kenneth Davis, business agent, says unions rejected the company offer and criticizes the use of economic pressure, noting the company created the situation.
The House approved President Kennedy's 4.6 billion Foreign Aid authorization by 221 to 162, sending the measure to the President for signature. It preserves administration requests including continued aid to Yugoslavia and Poland with broader presidential latitude, amid prior House Senate conferees’ criticisms.
Firefighters wrapped a 16 mile line around the Alder Ridge fire in the Selway Bitterroot Primitive Area near Idaho. The 1,765 acre blaze was tamed with 490 personnel and 17,550 gallons of borate retardant dropped by planes while four smokejumper injuries were reported in Idaho and Montana fires.
Self-Service Fan Firemen typically head to fires but R S Paulson of the Mueller Apartments brought his own fan to the fire department. The blaze in the front seat of Paulson's car was put out quickly by firefighters and was caused by cigar ashes with only light damage to the front seat cushion.
Searchers found parts of the bomber crew after a B47 Stratojet crash on Emigrant Peak south of Livingston. Four crewmen were aboard from Dyess AFB Texas, with one body found and others missing. A forest fire slowed recovery efforts as ground teams combed wreckage scattered over a half mile radius.
