Butte Captain Is Wounded in Normandy Invasion
Capt. L. E. Montgomery Jr., once a Butte dentist and early Normandy participant, has been wounded in action. He is hospitalized in England after evacuation from France. A Glasgow Montana and Chicago Dental College graduate, Montgomery served in the Army Dental Corps and later the medical corps of an Army engineering group during the invasion. He enlisted December 15, 1942 and previously served at Salt Lake City induction center and several California and Palm Springs Army facilities.

Principal Fries Resigns After Long Butte Service
Scott W Fries principal of Butte high school since 1930 submitted his resignation effective immediately at a school board meeting. The board accepted with regrets and authorized a letter of appreciation for his excellent service. Fries, a Wisconsin native and Wisconsin State University alumnus, began at Butte in 1908 as a math teacher and became assistant principal in 1923 before rising to principal.
