Conference on upstream water control for drought relief
Washington July 24. At President Roosevelt’s request a conference was called to discuss long range drought relief via upstream water control. Morris L. Cooke said the September 23 and 24 meeting would gather rainfall and run off data and present committee recommendations. The president urged reporting during a late August Northwest inspection and permanent control at the source. The Agriculture Department added 55 counties to the emergency drought list, including 27 in Kansas.

In Helena on July 24 the margin for the Democratic nomination as Montana state treasurer stood at 22 votes after 1,219 of 1,237 precincts reported. Ray N. Shannon led with 23,174 to Paul Smith’s 23,152. The canvass would determine the final result. Horace Casey led W P Pilgeram for railroad and public service commissioner with 1,212 precincts reporting. Casey 23,196 Pilgeram 22,313. Other contests unchanged.

Cloudburst disrupts highway and rail traffic near Jens
A sudden cloudburst near Jens, July 25, halted traffic on the Northern Pacific North Coast Limited. Floodwaters seven to 14 feet wide washed over tracks, uprooting logs and fences, while three highways flooded stranding about 50 cars and several stages. Crops in adjacent fields were damaged as waters lingered.

Anaconda Golfer Elected MSGA President at Meeting
A popular Anacondan wearing a bright red hat was elected unanimously as president of the Montana State Golfing Association at the annual meeting. Asheville professor detained in niece's murder inquiry
Prof. W. L. Clevenger of North Carolina State College, a 54 year old dairy farming specialist, was arrested in Asheville after returning from Fletcher Ohio where he attended the niece Helen Clevenger's funeral. Sheriff Brown held him for questioning as the case, tied to the slain NYC girl, moves forward. Nearby violinist Mark Wollner was released from custody after hours of questioning.

Train Wreck Kills Two in Wyoming Town
A Union Pacific freight passenger train derailed near Rock Springs Wyoming killing two men and injuring ten. One body recovered was Cr. H. Munn of Central City Nebraska who rode in a carload of chickens. Robert Miller of Rawlins died at the hospital after doctors amputated his arm in a bid to save him.

Barber Convicted in Rattlesnake Slaying of Wife
Robert S. James was found guilty of first degree murder for the death of his seventh wife Mary by drowning in a bathtub after forcing a rattlesnake to bite her. The jury did not recommend life imprisonment. sentencing set for next Tuesday. Bozeman Girl Dies From Accidental Gunshot Wound
Marian Virginia Phelps three years old daughter of Mr and Mrs Chester Phelps of Bozeman died in Livingston hospital from a gunshot wound suffered last Wednesday at Clyde Park while playing with other children. The bullet from a .22 rifle entered her forehead and she had been unconscious since. Funeral services will be held here Monday with burial in a Bozeman cemetery.

Oygard to Bristol Bay to combat typhoid fever spreading through Nu shagak Dillingham and nearby villages with no deaths reported so far.
